Environmental Services

Our Environmental Services (custodian) team plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and healing environment for everyone in our facilities.

This dedicated team works in every one of our hospitals and clinics, ensuring that all spaces—from patient rooms to surgical suites—are maintained to the highest standards. Many team members hold national certifications, such as Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician (CHEST) and Certified Surgical Cleaning Technician (CSCT), demonstrating their expertise and commitment to excellence.

In addition to routine cleaning, our custodians:

  • Disinfect and sanitize high-touch surfaces to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Maintain floors by sweeping, mopping, waxing, and shampooing carpets.
  • Clean and restock restrooms and breakrooms to ensure hygiene and comfort.
  • Empty trash and recycling and safely dispose of infectious waste.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as industrial vacuums, floor buffers, and carpet cleaners.
  • Wash windows and dust surfaces to maintain a bright and allergen-free environment.
  • Monitor and restock supplies, ensuring cleaning materials are always available.
  • Support safety protocols by identifying and reporting hazards promptly.

Within the Community Clinics team, some members specialize in traveling between clinics, while others are designated to clean aircraft for AirMed, supporting critical care transport operations.

Facilities Management (FM) encompasses various specialized units, including building maintenance, custodial services, building access and security systems, landscape services, and sustainability initiatives. The department's mission is to anticipate, create, and deliver services for the built and natural environment to support the needs of the University community.

FM leaders are committed to promoting job growth and career advancement within the organization. They actively support professional development through ongoing training opportunities, certifications, and mentorship—empowering employees to grow into roles such as:

Information Technology

Our Information Technology (IT) department is a driving force behind the systems, tools, and innovations that support exceptional patient care and hospital operations. From developing and maintaining mission-critical applications to ensuring the safety and reliability of the technologies used every day in our facilities, IT is essential to every part of our healthcare system.

Our team supports a wide range of functions, including Epic—our core electronic health record system used to track and manage patient care and communication. Biomedical Technicians maintain the life-altering and lifesaving equipment used across our hospitals and clinics, while our Desktop Support team ensures staff computers and devices are functioning efficiently to keep workflows running smoothly.

We also embrace cutting-edge innovations such as machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics to advance healthcare delivery and organizational performance. Our commitment to technology and continuous improvement has earned us national recognition—U of U Health has been named a CHIME Healthcare’s Most Wired recipient for eight consecutive years, achieving a Level 9 “Honor” certification for both acute and ambulatory care.

IT at U of U Health is about more than technology—it's about driving progress and making a daily impact.

Nutrition Care Services

Our Food & Nutrition Services team plays a crucial role in patient healing and wellbeing. Every day, we serve thousands of made-from-scratch meals crafted by professional chefs using high-quality ingredients that meet a variety of dietary needs—including low sodium, allergen-sensitive, diabetic-friendly, and texture-modified options. Our dedicated team of patient service representatives connects personally with patients, often offering a friendly smile or familiar voice while taking and entering meal orders. These reps help guide patients through their choices and ensure meals are delivered accurately and on time, supported by nutrition software and a ticketing system.

Behind the scenes, our operations mirror that of a full-scale restaurant kitchen, with staff preparing thousands of trays per day and working in tandem with clinical dietitians to ensure every dish is both flavorful and nutritionally sound. Special attention is also given to our most fragile patients—infants in the NICU—through our Milk Lab, where fortified breast milk is safely processed and measured for precise nourishment.

Whether working at the bedside or in one of our bustling kitchens, our team is committed to providing exceptional care through food—fueling recovery, comfort, and connection one meal at a time.

In addition to the roles highlighted above, U of U Health Hospitals and Clinics offers many other rewarding non-clinical career opportunities. Explore all current openings.
