Medical Insurance

The physical health of you and your family is very important to us. That’s why we offer you two health plan networks that puts decisions about your care and out-of-pocket costs in your hands. We provide all benefit-eligible employees with the opportunity to sign up for medical insurance.

As a Hospitals and Clinics employee, you can increase your cost savings by using U of U Health providers and our pharmacies. Coverage under our medical plans includes medical, vision eye care, and pharmacy coverage.

Prescription

If you're enrolled in our medical plan, you also have prescription coverage available to you. You will have greater cost savings if you choose to see a University of Utah Health provider and fill your prescriptions at a University of Utah Health pharmacy. You can still choose to use a non-University of Utah Health provider and/or non-University of Utah Health pharmacy. When you choose that option, you will not receive the same cost savings as with U of U Health providers or pharmacies.

Dental Insurance

Our dental plan covers 100% for preventive care including two oral exams and cleanings per member, per plan year, and one complete mouth x-ray in three years. The plan also covers 50% of prosthodontics (bridges, crowns, dentures) and 50% for reasonable and customary orthodontics charges.

Vision Eye Care and Hardware Benefits

Our health insurance plan includes vision eye care benefits. This entitles you and any of your enrolled dependents to a free annual exam at the Moran Eye Center.

You can also enroll in one of our Vision Hardware plans, which provides coverage for glasses, lenses and contacts.

Flex Spending

We offer our employees two flexible spending account (FSA) options—a health care FSA and a dependent care FSA.

The health care FSA allows you to put money aside for any medical needs you may have during the fiscal year. The dollar amount you select is divided by the number of pay periods in the year, deducted from your pay on a pre-tax basis, and set aside in an account for you. Our health care FSA plan also allows you to roll over up to $640 of unused contributions into the following plan year. This means you have less risk of losing the money you have set aside for health care-related expenses.

Our dependent care FSA is available to help you with the expense of caring for a child (or children) in daycare to enable you to work. Children must be 13 years old or younger and the care must be provided by a licensed daycare provider. Additionally, if you have an older dependent who lives with you at least 8 hours per day and requires someone to come into the house to assist with day-to-day living, you can claim these expenses through your Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account.

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability

We have Short-Term and Long-Term Disability benefits available to our full-time and part-time benefited employees.

Our Short-Term Disability benefit is an income-replacement benefit available to employees who become sick or injured for an extended time and are unable to return to work. All benefits-eligible employees are automatically enrolled at the 50% benefit, at no cost to you, and the 10% buy-up option upon hire. You have the option to change your enrollment in the 10% buy-up at any time.

Our Long-Term Disability benefit provides income replacement if you become sick or injured and are unable to return to work for longer than 90 days. It is employer-paid with a monthly benefit amount of 60% of your income.

Life Insurance

We offer life insurance for our employees—both employer-provided and supplemental life insurance. The company provides:

  • $50,000 for full-time employees
  • $25,000 for part-time employees

Supplemental life insurance up to $1 million is available for an additional cost. Employees can also choose to get life insurance coverage for their spouse/domestic partner and any dependent children.

Retirement

Whether retirement is a distant thought or it is around the corner, the Hospitals and Clinics retirement program is actively preparing you for that day. You have three ways to save for retirement. Having these options gives you more control and flexibility around making your retirement funds work for you.

401a Plan:

Fully funded employer contribution, equivalent to 6% of eligible gross pay, for benefit-eligible employees.

403b Plan:

An employee-funded plan with an employer match of up to 4 percent for benefit-eligible employees.

457b Plan:

Allows employees to contribute additional funds for retirement.

Hospital and Clinics is a participating employer with Utah Retirement Systems (URS). Eligible new hires with prior URS service may elect to enroll.
