Huntsman Mental Health Institute (Social Workers, Psych Techs, and Hospital Crisis Response Workers)

Our compassionate team at Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) is dedicated to helping individuals facing mental health crisis and challenges. Our social workers, psych techs and hospital crisis response workers have the opportunity to work at the HMHI located on the University of Utah campus, or at our new Kem and Carolyn Gardner Mental Health Crisis Care Center (MHCCC) in South Salt Lake.

Psychiatric Technicians: Our psych techs offer direct patient care and support during mental health crises.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing therapeutic dialogue
  • Processing admissions and discharges
  • Maintaining patient safety

Hospital Crisis Response Workers: Our response workers address social determinants of health and provide evidence-based interventions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing psychosocial stressors
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
  • Providing safety planning interventions

Social Workers: Our social workers provide therapeutic interventions to resolve mental health crises.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing patient needs
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
  • Providing therapeutic interventions

Pharmacy

Our pharmacy team members work in inpatient and outpatient roles at all U of U Health hospitals and clinics. We have pharmacists and techs who work in our retail clinics helping patients fill their prescriptions, in our infusion centers helping patients receive the medications they need for different illnesses, and even technicians who act as pharmacy detectives gathering information about patients at our hospitals.

Pharmacy Technicians: Our pharmacy technicians can work in various capacities. They play a vital role in assisting pharmacists in providing patient care, managing supplies, and problem-solving within the pharmacy department. Many of our Pharmacy Tech Trainees go on to become certified technicians and continue advancing through tuition-covered programs.

  • Technician I: Assists pharmacists with basic tasks and may be involved in dispensing medications, entering prescription information, and providing basic customer service.
  • Technician II: Provides more advanced services, including IV therapy preparation, chemotherapy preparation, and managing automated dispensing machines. They may also be involved in training other staff and problem-solving within the department.
  • Pharmacy Technician Trainee: A program that offers hands-on training and real-world experience in a pharmacy setting. The program includes both online curriculum and practical work in inpatient and outpatient pharmacies. U of U Health also offers free tuition and covers the PTCB exam fee for those who complete the program and obtain a certification.

Radiology

Our technologists play a crucial role in the Radiology Services department at University of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics. These dedicated professionals utilize cutting-edge technology to diagnose and treat diseases, serving patients across Utah and the Mountain West.

  • Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Therapy: While our Radiologic, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography, and Nuclear Medicine technologists focus on diagnostic imaging, our Radiation Therapists specialize in treating patients with radiation therapy.
  • Annual Performance: Annually, our team performs and interprets over 250,000 exams, including MRIs, CTs, x-rays, ultrasounds, mammograms, and nuclear medicine scans.
  • Accreditation: Our Radiology Services department is accredited by the American College of Radiologists (ACR), reflecting our commitment to upholding the highest standards of education, research, and radiological care.

Surgical Services

Patients come to U of U Health for a wide range of procedures, from elective to non-elective surgeries, including highly specialized and delicate surgeries. Our team of operating room nurses, surgical technicians, and sterile processing technicians is committed to creating a safe environment for our patients and tending to their well-being. These positions also offer opportunities for career advancement and ongoing education.

Operating Room (OR) Nurses: Our OR nurses ensure patient safety and well-being during surgical procedures. Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating with the surgical team
  • Ensuring equipment readiness
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals
  • Enforcing infection control measures
  • Providing emotional support to patients and families

Surgical Technicians: Our surgical technicians prepare operating rooms and assist during surgeries. Responsibilities include:

  • Setting up sterile instruments and equipment
  • Maintaining a sterile environment
  • Assisting the surgical team
  • Cleaning and sterilizing post-surgery

Sterile Processing Technicians: Our sterile processing team ensures surgical instruments are disinfected and ready for use. Responsibilities include:

  • Disinfecting and sterilizing instruments
  • Managing operating room needs
  • Ensuring instrument quality
