Job Summary

The St. George Tissue Recovery Specialist is a Per Diem, non-benefited position, and is responsible for recovering corneal eye tissues in southern Utah needed for transplant; performing and documenting a donor physical and ocular assessment; obtaining an adequate blood specimen for serological testing; and conducting professional interactions with hospital staff, OPO and tissue bank staff, coroner’s office, and funeral directors.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at St. George Moran Clinic if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

Responsibilities

The St. George Tissue Recovery Specialist will be responsible for the following:

-Know and follow current hospital procedures regarding organ/tissue donation in accordance with current FDA / EBAA / OME / ULEB Policies and Procedures.

-Perform surgical excision of corneas, corneoscleral rim excision and aseptic preservation.

-Perform a physical inspection of the donor and recognize and document any signs of high risk behavior on ULEB Donor Worksheet.

-Perform an ocular assessment of the donor’s eyes and document any findings on ULEB Donor Worksheet.

-Observe AORN sterile & aseptic techniques with universal precautions during eye recovery procedures.

-Draw cadaveric blood and/or obtain a pre-transfusion/pre-mortem blood sample, if necessary.

-Process each donor appropriately including data entry, charting, and follow-up.

-Conduct professional interactions with Eye Bank Donor Coordinators and other staff to facilitate timely procurement of donor eye tissue.

-Label, package, and ship ocular tissue per FDA / EBAA / ULEB Policies and Procedures.

-Obtain a copy of the hospital chart for the donor’s current admission, if applicable.

-Adhere to University Hospitals & Clinics Behavioral Standards.

-Know and utilize OSHA standards when handling tissue and disposable hazardous materials and participate in annual bloodborne pathogen training.

-Maintain excellent customer service relations with referring hospitals, funeral directors, and OPO’s.

-Assist in education and training of technical staff.

-Maintain compliance with Federal HIPAA regulations and complete annual HIPAA training as required by the University of Utah – School of Medicine.

-Attend Monthly Technical Staff Meetings.

-Participate and comply with established Quality Assurance policies and assist with routine monitoring upon request.

-Accomplish special projects and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

-Possess knowledge of all ULEB recovery procedures, EBAA Medical Standards, and technical/medical terminology.

-Possess skills in aseptic technique and manual dexterity.

-Strong communication skills with excellent telephone and electronic etiquette.

-Ability to prioritize procurement of donors to maintain efficiency in tissue recovery with minimum supervision.

-Exercise good judgment and initiative, keep confidences, be honest and discreet.

-Cooperate and communicate clearly with doctors and other professionals in the healthcare field.

-Respect patient confidentiality, honesty, and integrity.

-Maintain an excellent attendance record.

-Interact with all others in a professional and customer-friendly manner.

-Ability to be a supportive team member.

-Background in medical/laboratory fields.

-Must have own car with a valid Idaho driver’s license.

-Travel required within service area of the ULEB ; may include flights on single engine aircraft.

-Prefer one year experience in eye, organ, and tissue banking.

-Must be able to take call as assigned.

-Optional: Certification as an Eye Bank Technician by the Eye Bank Association of America.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred.
