Job Summary

Great opportunity for students to employees interested in attending graduate/medical school, the Utah Lions Eye Bank offers an optional pre-health program. No certification or previous experience required; training will be provided by the employer. Must reside in St. George Area.

The Utah Lions Eye Bank is a non-profit organization that facilitates the gift of sight through cornea donation as well as provides ocular tissue to researchers that study eye blinding diseases. The Utah Lions Eye Bank serves the state of Utah as well as parts of Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming. Located in Murray Utah, we are a full-service eye bank operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Eye Bank Tissue Recovery Specialist is a part-time/on-call position. The employee is responsible for the excision of ocular tissue from deceased authorized donors for the purpose of transplantation. The employee will be responsible for driving to the recovery location (e.g hospital, Office of the Medical Examiners/Coroner’s Office, funeral home), perform pre-recovery assessments of the donor to determine eligibility, perform the ocular excision procedure, and properly deliver recovered ocular tissue to the correct facility.

Responsibilities

The Eye Bank Field Tissue Recovery Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Performing surgical excisions of corneas and corneoscleral rim excision and aseptic preservation.
  • Draw cadaveric blood samples and/or obtain a pre-transfusion/pre-mortem blood sample, if necessary.
  • Process each donor appropriately including data entry, charting, and follow-up.
  • Conduct professional interactions with Eye Bank Donor Coordinators and other staff to facilitate timely procurement of donor eye tissue.
  • Label, package, and ship ocular tissue per FDA / EBAA / ULEB Policies and Procedures to Envision and the Utah Lions Eye Bank.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred.
