Job Summary

The University of Utah First Star Academy is a college-preparatory program for high school youth in foster care. Youth coaches are mentors, tutors, role models and advisors to students and families in the program. Youth coaches also plan and lead activities, build and teach curriculum, complete office duties, engage in the program’s social media, and support the program administratively.

Responsibilities

1. Build rapport with youth through such skills as reflective listening, modeling appropriate behavior and holding boundaries

2. Mentor students through activities, meetings, tutoring, and homework help

3. Assist students and families with case management needs and attend Child and Family Team Meetings

4. Lead and/or contribute to programmatic and administrative projects, including social media, fundraising efforts, scheduling rooms, data entry, etc.

5. Create and teach activities and curriculum

6. Work well as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of general office experience, one of which in an academic setting; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required. College coursework in a related area is preferred.

Preferences

This position is open to work-study students in their junior or senior year. This position is great experience for students studying social work, education, counseling or public policy.
