Job Summary

Between 11/10/2017 and 1/2/2018 there were 19 bird strikes recorded along the north east entryway windows to the Alfred Emery Building on President’s Circle, mostly cedar waxwings. The windows in this area are very reflective so that birds do not perceive the glass surface until they fly into them. Estimates are that up to a billion birds may die annually in the U.S. from window strikes (Ocampo-Peñuela et al. 2016) in addition to impending extinction risks due to climate change (Wormworth and Sekercioglu 2011).

The building manager has supplied an estimate of $4,6000 to purchase and install exterior adhesive markers.

We would like to collect data to help with aSCIFgrant proposal and to find long-term solutions for this problem.


1. Learn to collect date on bird strike deaths with INaturalist or other applications.

2. DevelopSCIFgrant proposal with faculty to prevent future deaths.

3. Research long-term solutions for University of Utah building codes.
