Job Summary

The Content Management and Usability team in UIT is hiring a UX/UI designer. The person in this position will use user-centered design methodologies to create and redesign University websites, within a Web Content Management System framework. They will lead and manage the usability life-cycle of website designs/redesigns by conducting usability interviews and tests, and analyze information to make important decisions about the information architecture of the site, design, and layout of pages. Machine-readability for SEO and accessibility will be a top priority when designing. He/she works closely with clients to develop website functionality, usability, and visual appeal; scopes project timelines; and ensures deliverables are produced on time.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

• Lead the design, development and implementation of new and redesigned websites.

  • Conduct needs assessments, develop functional specifications and production guidelines for projects.
  • Ensure designs are easy to use, visually appealing, WCAG compliant, cross-browser/platform/device compatible and meet client needs.
  • Conduct and analyze usability tests as part of a UX/UI development process to determine effective solutions.
  • Coordinate multiple projects and timelines simultaneously to ensure deliverables are produced on time.
  • Utilize task tracking software to organize, assign, manage, and report the work load.
  • Delegate programming tasks to developers.
  • Mentor and delegate lower-level tasks to student interns.

• Assist in developing templates and processes that facilitate campus-wide rollout of products and services.

• Collaborate with a team of UX/UI developers on campus-wide web and mobile applications.

• Serve as a resource to web editors on best practice topics such as usability, user research and testing, information architecture, search engine optimization, web accessibility compliance, user interface design, page layout, image optimization, and writing for the web.

• Stay current on internet trends and opportunities as they relate to user experiences, user interfaces and content management.

• Aid in the creation and growth of the University Webmasters Community of Practice.

• Assist in managing Google Analytics and Tag Manager properties.

• Provide excellent customer service and support to clients.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

• Bachelor’s degree in Multi-Disciplinary Design, Graphic Design, Information Systems, Communication, Media Arts or related field or equivalent education and experience in addition to 2 years of related work experience in web or UX design.

• Well versed in the following topics: usability research methodologies, design thinking, information architecture, search engine optimization, accessibility, user interface design, image optimization, and writing for the web.

• A strong online portfolio and a passion for great user experiences (please provide a link).

• Demonstrated visual design and page layout skills.

• Experience building accessible user interfaces, with a strong working knowledge of WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

• Familiarity with developing designs within constraints such as content management systems, IT service management systems and social media platforms.

• Proficient with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

• Understanding of HTML , JavaScript and CSS .

• Demonstrated communication skills: verbal, written, visual.

• Able to work effectively and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.

• Above and beyond customer service skills.

• Demonstrated ability to provide estimates and meet project milestones and established deadlines.

• Friendly, outgoing, and helpful disposition.

• Strong attention to detail and superb organizational skills.

• Open to receiving feedback and constructive criticism.
