Job Summary

The Utah Education and Telehealth Network ( UETN ) provides Internet access, wide area network ( WAN ) connectivity, and interactive video conferencing ( IVC ) services to support distant education for Public K12, Higher Education and Healthcare throughout Utah. UETN manages a statewide, high capacity fiber optic based network and video based distance education services to connect students, educators and healthcare professionals throughout Utah.

The candidate will support the southwestern region of Utah maintaining all UETN , projects, assets and services. This candidate will lead and assist in network maintenance of backbone and end site equipment. This position is also responsible for troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, and testing of both network and IVC services and associated equipment. This position requires experience with network and fiber based broadband services.


Candidate will be responsible for statewide troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, repair and acceptance testing of existing and new transport equipment that may include network routers, switches, fiber transport and wireless services. Proper labeling, placement and termination of copper and fiber lines is essential. Statewide travel and night work is required. Candidate will also assist with microwave radio projects and maintenance. Along with IVC /classroom installs and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, information technology, or computer science or equivalency and 4-6 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Qualification may vary depending on department utilizing position.

Department Specific Qualifications:

  • Candidate must have fiber optic splicing and testing experience and knowledge of industry best practices standards and codes.
  • 4-6 years of experience within service provider level telecommunications preferred.
  • 4 years experience installing, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing of the physical layer components of a WAN , LAN network.
  • A sound working knowledge of SONET , DWDM , ROADM , Ethernet and wireless is essential.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostics with fiber and Mux test equipment to include OTDR , power meter, fast test, network analyzer, OSA , CD, and PMD testers.
  • Proper fiber cleaning and inspection techniques are required. Fiber optic termination and splicing experience.
  • Ability to calculate link loss.
  • Basic knowledge of structured cabling.
  • Abilty to utilize hand and power tools and power tools at ground level and above ground level.
  • Good installation and wiring skills.
  • Ability to read a diagrams and blue prints.
  • Working knowledge of AC/ DC power, grounding and associated equipment within communications faclities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office and computers.
  • Ability to work independently make decisions in the field as needed and is self-motivated team player.
  • This position requires statewide travel, evening/late night and weekend work as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb and preform work on an 8 ft. ladder, use hand and power tools.
  • Must be willing and able to operate ATV’s and UTV’s tow a trailer up to 20 feet long with a work truck in all driving conditions.
  • Must have a good driving record and valid Driver’s License
