The University of Utah, School of Medicine is seeking a senior Infectious Disease physician for a position as Director of a new Global Health and Tropical Medicine Program in the Division of Infectious Diseases as a Tenure-track Professor or Associate Professor, dependent on qualifications.

The ideal applicant will be capable of leading the development of a cross-departmental and multi-disciplinary Global Health Research Program at the University of Utah. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain an extramurally funded research program and have experience in mentorship of junior faculty. They will also have the opportunity to develop and coordinate global health research activities with the School of Medicine and University of Utah Health, building upon ongoing NIH -funded collaborative research partnerships in multiple locations, including Bangladesh, Cameroon, Haiti, Rwanda, and Tanzania. The candidate will also be expected to participate in the Travel Medicine and Global Health activities of the Infectious Diseases Division, particularly in the education of fellows.

The Infectious Diseases Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Utah consists of 17 faculty and 27 staff members not including clinic staff. The division derives its funding from clinical revenue, a Ryan White federal grant to support care of people living with HIV , and other federal and non-federal research grants, including NIH / NCI / NIAID funded research in virology, gastrointestinal infections, diagnostics, and vaccines.

Our clinical services consist of outpatient clinics at both the University and the VA and inpatient consultation at both institutions. There are separate outpatient clinics for General Infectious Diseases, Immunocompromised patients, Travel Medicine, and HIV . The Infectious Disease Travel Medicine activities include evaluation and care of returning travelers, and supervision of eight nurse-run pre-travel clinics. The division participates as a site in the CDC -funded GeoSentinel and Global TravEpiNet surveillance programs.

All faculty participate in the educational mission by taking part in the seminars, didactic lectures, clinical conferences and the fellowship program. Unique resources available at the University of Utah School of Medicine include the ARUP laboratories, a national clinical reference laboratory and a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development and extensive expertise in human genetics, including the Utah Population Database. In addition, the Division partners with basic and translational researchers in the University-wide Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Disease (3i) Initiative.

Applicants must be board certified in Infectious Diseases, have a strong record of extramural funded research with an international reputation, and progressive administrative experience. Funding from the Department of Medicine/ Division of Infectious Diseases may include an Endowed Chair in Global Health and Tropical Medicine. Ample resources and a startup package to support faculty recruitment and development of a cross-departmental and multi-disciplinary Global Health Program will be provided to the successful candidate.
