Job Summary

The University Fiber Optic Team provides 24/7/365 support to the networks across the University campus, Hospitals, and clinics. The Fiber Technician 3 is a lead position and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University Vertical and Horizontal fiber optic and copper cable plant. Performs fiber patching, splicing, installing, testing, cable management, and documentation. Also, when needed, installs and troubleshoots copper network and phone cables. The Fiber Technician 3 provides project scope and materials input, problem diagnosing and repair, and coordinates with customers. Provides supervision and mentoring to level 1 and 2 fiber and copper technicians.

Responsibilities

1.Ensures there is 24/7/365 support to the University cable plant (copper and Fiber).

2.Enters cable and infrastructure data into databases.

3.Ensures the accuracy of data, analyzes conflicting data, and verifies/collects missing information.

4.Utilizes computer programs/software.

5.Monitors and responds to fiber work order queues.

6.Provides mentoring and supervision to level 1 and 2 copper and fiber technicians.

7.Determines materials for jobs.

8.Performs quality inspections of work.

9.Keeps communication closets and work environments tidy.

10.Must be able to perform the duties of a Fiber and Copper Technician 2

11.Use fiber optic and copper test equipment

Minimum Qualifications

Fiber Optic cabling: Four years full-time work or equivalency installing, testing and repairing fiber optic cabling and terminations, a working knowledge and experience using all fiber optic testing equipment and all types of fiber connectors and terminations, experience in fusion splicing and strong computer skills including Excel required. The ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIAstandards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license.

A working knowledge of AutoCAD andGISpreferred.

Department Specific Requirements:

Experience installing and testing copper phone and network cables; experience installing/splicing/terminating vertical and horizontal fiber cabling; effective human relations, leadership, and customer communication skills; perform all the duties of a Telco and Fiber Technician 2; experience doing walkouts to create work scopes and materials lists; willingness and aptitude to learn additional networking skills; able to use Microsoft Office tools, make data base entries, and create reports; take direction; work independently; maintain a professional appearance and dress.

Preferences

Minimum 5 years’ experience working with fiber optic cable.
