Job Summary


Monitors and controls hospital systems by checking gauge readings and maintaining equipment including steam producers, boilers, liquid chemicals, generators, and other equipment; submits trouble reports and assists in making repairs when equipment readings are abnormal. Monitors equipment and medical gases alarm panels in control room; responds to alarms and ensures continued uninterrupted service; notifies appropriate department personnel when repairs are necessary; assists in making repairs or switching to back-up systems as required. Inspects all equipment in assigned areas of the hospital and clinics on each shift. Monitors the hospital’s fire alarm system; acts as a member of the fire brigade team in responding to alarms. Works with the campus High Temperature Water Plant Operator to restore the Plant and/or water supply when required; restores services to individual assigned buildings. Responds to electrical power outages and other emergencies and works to restore services to assigned buildings. Responds to trouble reports from hospital departments and clinics; coordinates repair activities with department personnel including plumbers, mechanics, etc. Records operating data on standard log or on the department’s computer system. Provides assistance in preparing energy consumption reports by furnishing information and/or preparing charts, graphs, reports, etc. Performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on hospital equipment. If assigned leadworker status, may direct, schedule, and assign work to other Systems Operators.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience with building systems control or related experience or equivalency; demonstrated knowledge of automated and computer-directed building systems, plumbing and electrical systems, and pneumatic and electronic control systems; and familiarity with heating and air conditioning systems required. A working knowledge and understanding of mechanical equipment, automation and field hardware; and demonstrated computer literacy, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
