Job Summary

Project Description:

Our lab is interested in improving healthy aging with nutritional approaches using mice as a pre-clinical model for discovery. In particular, we are investigating the benefits of time-restricted feeding and calorie restriction in improving metabolic disease in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. We are seeking a conscientious, detail-oriented, motivated and enthusiastic research assistant scientist to join our team.

Students will be provided with technical and scientific training on-the-job in a friendly and collaborative environment. In particular, students will learn good laboratory practices and standard laboratory techniques such as buffer preparation and lab supplies stocking. The student will also learn standard biochemistry techniques, which include sample preparation, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR , and gel electrophoresis, as well as animal physiology techniques. Significant contribution to the research and achievements will be acknowledged in potential publications and letters of recommendation. Students will be also be encouraged to present their results at conferences

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at (insert work site) if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

Responsibilities

Student Role:

The research assistant will be participating in the design, conduct and analysis of the data gathered during our pre-clinical trials.

1. Responsible for the daily care of animals.

2. Assist lab personnel with the research procedures and techniques.

3. Sample processing.

4. Lab maintenance and support.

Minimum Qualifications

This job posting is only available to current University of Utah students.

Preferences

- Students majoring in a Medical or Biological Sciences related subject are preferred.

- Students must be willing to work with mice.

- Students must be punctual, meticulous and rigorous in completing assigned tasks.

- Prior experience, background or interests in any of the following areas are also beneficial: Nutrition; Aging; Metabolism; Circadian Clock.

- The ability to work well as a team member with effective communication skills is essential.
