Job Summary

The Student Navigator will work with the Mentor within the TRIO -Student Support Services ( SSS ) Program to facilitate overall success and support activities within the TRIO - SSS Program. Student Navigators will check in with first time freshmen students to ensure familiarity with navigating the University of Utah academic environment. Additionally, Student Navigators will work with the Lead Mentor in developing content for the TRIO SSS Workshop Series for the fall and spring semesters, lead community building activities, and support administrative responsibilities for the TRIO SSS Program.

Program Overview

The TRIO Student Support Services Programs ( SSS ) at the University of Utah is an educational success program for first generation, low-income and students with disabilities who are seeking their first bachelor’s degree. The SSS Program serves qualified admitted students at the university and provides students with academic advising, tutoring, financial aid assistance, career exploration and course offerings in math, writing and first year experience (tuition free to those who qualify) as well as disburses $30,000 of scholarships to participants in the program each year. This program is funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education.

• Maintain contact with students to ensure follow up with required services and activities within the program and the university environment.

• Assist in the development of the workshop series for the fall and spring semesters.

• Assist with planning and promoting program activities and events.

• Assist with outreach efforts to prospective TRIO students.

• Refer students to appropriate campus resources.

• Communicate with professional staff regarding student progress and transition.

• Promote a supportive environment for all participants and serve as a positive role model and representative of the TRIO office.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must have completed a minimum of twenty-nine credits of college coursework and have a minimum 3.0 CGPA .

• Be a current TRIO - SSS Participant and be willing to be an active participant for the 2021-2022 academic year.

• Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with students from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.

• Be willing to commit 20 hours per week.

• Must be work-study eligible.

• Student Navigators must attend:

o Student Navigator Training (prior to the first week of the fall semester)
