Job Summary

This is a P/T non-benefited position in the St. George region The Eye Bank Tissue Recovery Specialist is responsible for recovering eye tissues needed for transplant and/or research; performing and documenting a donor physical and ocular assessment; obtaining an adequate blood specimen for serologic testing; and conducting professional interactions with hospital staff,OPOand tissue bank staff, the Office of the Medical Examiner, and funeral directors


Performs surgical procedures to remove and prepare human corneal tissue for transplant and research. Coordinates the placement of approved tissue for transplants with surgeons. Evaluates the processed cornea to determine suitability of tissue for human transplant. Coordinates referrals from other agencies and the call center for potential donors. Determines donor suitability of corneal tissue for transplantation by investigating patient?s medical and social background utilizing all available resources. Approaches families regarding the option of donation of corneal tissue for transplantation, research and education purposes. Conducts quality control. Manages and maintains laboratory supplies and reagents.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.


EMTor medical experience preferred.

Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred.

Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred.
