Job Summary

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is seeking a full-time Laboratory Specialist (Specialist) to join our team. We are seeking someone who is energetic and willing to work with students within the field of civil, construction and nuclear engineering.

The Specialist will be overseeing the teaching laboratories to ensure that the laboratory equipment is operational for the weekly labs. In addition to the overall operations of the labs, the Specialist will work with the faculty in coaching and teaching the department Teaching Assistants in the safe and effective operation and management of the equipment.

Responsibilities

1. Prepares, operates and maintains the undergraduate laboratory equipment in coordination with department faculty.

2. Creates and implements the training of Teaching Assistants.

3. Directs the daily operation of the lab, including daily setup for labs in conjunction with Teaching Assistant.

4. Ensures that the labs are clean.

5. Maintains the safety protocols for the labs and ensures students are following the safety rules within the labs.

6. Oversees and tracks purchasing for student course fees associated the labs.

7. Assists in purchasing of items for the labs including supplies, preventative maintenance, repairs, etc.

8. Assists with required reporting for department accreditation and audits.

9. Coordinates with faculty in equipment updating prioritization.

10. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking, bending, reaching overhead.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency, plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
