Job Summary

The Snyder lab at the HCI is looking for a Senior Lab Specialist to provide experimental and organizational support for the lab’s research on lung and pancreatic cancer. The lab (https://uofuhealth.utah.edu/huntsman/labs/snyder/) uses genetically engineered mouse models, in combination with orthogonal in vitro techniques, to investigate regulators of cancer cell identity and therapeutic response. Responsibilities

The candidate’s responsibilities will include lab management and leading an independent research project on pancreatic and/or lung cancer under the guidance of the PI and in collaboration with other lab members. Specific responsibilities include:

1) Leading a specific research project that will result in one or more first author manuscripts. Preparing manuscript and figures for submission and publication.

2) Collaborating with other lab members to advance the lab’s overall research program.

3) Training junior and incoming lab members in experimental techniques.

4) Lab management (e.g., lab safety, ordering and stocking supplies, hazardous waste disposal).

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency, plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline or equivalency.

Master’s degree, doctoral degree, and/or several years working in a research lab with techniques relevant to the Snyder lab.

Experience preparing manuscripts for publication.

Experience with complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations, organizational and communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification will be required.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with some or all of the following techniques: mouse colony management, immunohistochemistry, mammalian tissue culture, western blotting, molecular biology and PCR , chromatin immunoprecipitation, and microscopy. Candidates should be detail-oriented, capable of working independently and in small groups, and possess excellent organization, analytical, and communication skills. Candidates will be expected to direct their own independent research and also to train new lab members.
