Job Summary
The Sr Accountant performs complex accounting tasks such as preparing financial statements including balance sheets, cash flow statements and IRS reports. Reviews and analyzes general ledger account balances. Provides guidance to lower level accounting personnel.

In addition, Housing & Residential Education has two apartment buildings located in downtown Salt Lake City that constitute Downtown Commons. Heritage Commons constitutes 868K square feet and Downtown Commons is 26K square feet. HRE is growing with a 309 bed Honors Living Learning complex (161K square feet) that opened August 2012 and additional 400 bed Entrepreneur-Innovation Living Learning complex (150K square feet) opening August 2016. The University Housing Campus Master plan calls for continued growth and construction to meet the housing demand.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Budget & Finance.

Responsibilities
Accounts Receivable
1. Manage day-to-day Accounts Receivable operations.
A. Add student meal and room plan charges
B. Audit application, reservation, and other fees
C. Audit waivers
2. Participate on HRE Contract Appeals Committee.
3. Work closely with other campus departments regarding student account changes.
4. Reconcile Accounts Receivable accounts to verify accuracy between HRE and university financial reports.
A. Management Report Reconciliation
B. Credit Card Reconciliations
C. Bursar’s Office Reconciliations
5. Preparation of journal entries as needed.
6. Manage student meal plans, responsibilities include: adding, changing, removing, flex dollar adjustments, and reconciliation with Dining Services.
7. Process invoicing and payments related to third party groups and school clubs renting conference spaces in many Housing & Residential Education buildings.
8. Resolve conflicts concerning student accounts; work with front desk staff to resolve issues.
General
1. Assist with input of monthly period closing report numbers as needed.
2. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related filed, plus one year related experience or equivalency required; a thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills are required.
2. Ability to understand, and apply University departmental regulations in workplace.
3. Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment.
4. Excellent organizational skills.
5. Ability to accurately analyze information, situations, and procedures.
6. Experience in writing business correspondence and operating procedures.
7. Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, university officials, and vendors in diverse university setting.
8. Working knowledge of various software packages (including Excel spreadsheets, word processing and e-mail).
9. Ability to work a modified schedule as needed.
Preferences
1. Experience working with StarRez and/or PeopleSoft software.
2. Experience working within a college / university setting.
3. Experience working with Atrium or other meal plan databases such as CS Gold or Blackboard.
