Job Summary

Must have the ability to stand and walk for eight hours; a valid Utah Driver’s License with proof of

insurability; and the ability to pass an extensive background check required. In addition, you will be responsible to secure buildings to avoid theft and

property damage throughout the University. Applies preventive measures to insure possible hazards are minimized. Demonstrated human relation skills

and a working knowledge of radio codes and regulations along with a commitment to provide excellent customer service are also required.


1. Unlocks University buildings at the beginning of each work day and secures University property by locking buildings and turning off lights and other electrical devices unintentionally left on after office hours.

2. Patrols the University, inspecting buildings, examining doors and windows, and checking for intrusions.

3. Assists the Fire Department by answering fire alarms with fire fighters and unlocking buildings and barriers to permit entry.

4. Assist Police Department by investigating disturbances and referring the call to police if a violation of the law has occurred.

5. Maintains appropriate logs to advise department heads of potential security problems.

6. Provides special services to the University community such as locking and unlocking offices, escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions.

7. Monitors the security of controlled substances and expensive equipment through closed-circuit television to prevent theft.

8. Assists hospital staff during medical emergencies by managing crowd control.

In collaboration with a supervisor, incumbents may need to determine when to restrain combative patients, detain persons suspected of criminal activity or trespassing and/or contact University Police for assistance.

Depending on the department or area of service, the following may apply:

•The incumbent is exposed to potentially stressful or dangerous situations that result from human behavior and hostile situations that may become assault threatening, necessitating the use of physical force.

•The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb or run up/down stairs, kneel, crouch or crawl and occasional use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Incumbents occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and must be physically capable of restraining a combative patient or trespasser. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust vision with corrective measures.

•The incumbent is expected to participate in a rotating on-call schedule , 24-hours a day, seven days a week, work weekends and holidays, and to handle emergencies particularly during special events on campus.

•The incumbent might be required to obtain International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (I.A.H.S.S.) certification after six months of being hired in areas where the Director of Public Safety has determined it to be essential.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma,GEDor equivalency and one year security experience or equivalency; successfully pass a background check; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. A valid Utah Driver’s License also required.

The incumbent will be required to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute certification (CPI) after being hired. The incumbent will also be required to attend other mandatory trainings as determined or required by the Department of Public Safety.
