Job Summary

Secures buildings to avoid theft and property damage within the University Hospital and Clinics and throughout the University as needed. Applies preventive measures to insure possible hazards are minimized.



This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Essential Functions

1. Patrols all of the University Hospital and Clinics as part of a proactive program for the safety and security of the facility. May patrol other University buildings as needed, inspecting buildings, examining doors and windows, and checking for intrusions.

2. Controls access to the University Hospital and Clinics; checks identification, vehicles, packages, administers the limited access program for internal doors.

3. May unlock University buildings at the beginning of each work day and secure University property by locking buildings and turning off lights and other electrical devices unintentionally left on after office hours.

4. Assists the Fire Department by answering fire alarms with fire fighters and unlocking buildings and barriers to permit entry.

5. Assist Police Department by investigating disturbances and referring the call to police if a violation of the law has occurred.

6. Maintains appropriate logs and reports to advise department heads of potential security problems.

7. Provides special services to the University community such as locking and unlocking offices, escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions.

8. Monitors the security of controlled substances and expensive equipment through closed-circuit television to prevent theft.

9. May assists hospital staff during medical emergencies by managing crowd control.

Behavior Response/Case Management and Training Team

4.Team member will respond to active issues regarding disruption of hospital functions and safety of hospital staff, patients and visitors

5.Perform case management, tracking and reporting

6.Assigned as needed to training team (defensive tactics, de-escalation etc.)

Selected individuals will be required to obtain certification/training fromIAHSS(International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety),HOPE(Healthcare Options for the exceptional Patient Experience) and other training as outlined by unit Sergeant, prior to completing the 6 month probationary period.

Problem Solving:

In collaboration with a supervisor, incumbents may need to determine when to restrain combative patients, detain persons suspected of criminal activity or trespassing and/or contact University Police for assistance.

Depending on the department or area of service, the following may apply:

-The incumbent is exposed to potentially stressful or dangerous situations that result from human behavior and hostile situations that may become threatening, necessitating the use of physical force.

-The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb or run up/down stairs, kneel, crouch or crawl and occasional use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Incumbents occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and must be physically capable of restraining a combative patient or trespasser, potentially with the use of handcuffs. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust vision with corrective measures.

-The incumbent is expected to participate in a rotating on-call schedule , 24-hours a day, seven days a week, work weekends and holidays, and to handle emergencies particularly during special events on campus.

-The incumbent might be required to obtain International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security (I.A.H.S.S.) certification after six months of being hired in areas where the Director of Public Safety has determined it to be essential.

Nearly Continuously: Infectious Diseases (frequent exposure to contagious or infections diseases)

Often: Office environment, outdoor environment, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise (there is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level), exposure to animals, atmospheric conditions (conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation)

Seldom: Oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids)

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Often: Sitting, repetitive hand motion (such as typing), repetitive foot motion (such as using foot controls), bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, balancing, reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, lifting – up to 50 pounds, lifting – over 50 pounds

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma,GEDor equivalency and one year security experience or equivalency; successfully pass a background check; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. A valid Utah Driver’s License also required.

The incumbent will be required to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute certification (CPI) after being hired. The incumbent will also be required to attend other mandatory trainings as determined or required by the Department of Public Safety; Hospital Security Division and/or University Hospitals and Clinics after being hired.
