This is a customer service position at the J. Willard Marriott Library that helps to provide a safe environment for employees and visitors, and preserves and protects the facilities and collections. Library Security & Information is charged with the ongoing responsibility for security, fire prevention and protection, and safety within the library and its grounds. In addition to providing a security presence at the library’s entrances, employees will enforce all Library and University policies and will be responsible for contacting University of Utah Police if State or Federal laws are being broken. Employees will be expected to provide information, circulation assistance, and directional help for the library as well as the University campus.
Conduct regular building patrols and have a constant presence while in the building.
Maintain and ensure an environment that is conducive to research and learning.
Respond to emergency situations that may require immediate attention and responsible for total evacuation of the building and will serve as the liaison with campus emergency personnel to communicate when the building may be re-entered.
First responders to medical emergencies and direct emergency personnel to locations throughout the building.
Responsible for noticing problems with the building and reporting them to Library and University Facilities.
Enforce all Library and University policies in addition to resolving complaints and policy infractions appropriately. Officers may decide if an individual should be removed from the library for a specified period of time.
Initiate conversations with individuals if the book gate alarm is triggered to guarantee that library materials are checked out.
Determine when computer policies are being violated and determine if the individual must be banned from computer use.
Document all incidents that occur within the library or its grounds – whether it is building-related or with individuals.
Officers issue temporary public computer guest passes to community patrons.
Collect “lost and found” items from within the library and its immediate grounds, and maintain a record of items in the department database.
Responsible for coordinating several aspects of circulation including, account set up for University of Utah community patrons and guests, fine and lost book resolutions, billing, recalls and holds management.
Perform all cashier functions for the Library including fines, lost books, library permits, faxing services, and other library sales, including balancing out the register at the end of each shift.
Provide assistance with retrieving items that are available for pickup such as Interlibrary Loan, Holds, and Automated Retrieval Center (ARC) material.
Maintain service in theARCduring evening and weekend hours.
Answer the library’s main informational phone line at the entrances.
Responsible for opening the building each day, as well as clearing and securing the building and its contents each night.
The duties and tasks included are representative of the position and not comprehensive. Duties may be added or deleted in the best interest of the organization and its patrons.
Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
For the Library to be able to appropriately monitor hours worked, part-time employees are generally asked to restrict their work with the University of Utah to Library employment only, unless an exception is granted.
This position requires the successful completion of a criminal background check upon job offer.
Security & Information has a tremendous amount of responsibility. Employees must be committed to providing outstanding customer service, and be comfortable with enforcing policies. They must demonstrate good human relations, communication, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills. Employees must be confident in responding to any situation, including emergencies, that may arise in the building. They must also have the ability to remain calm in a stressful or crisis situation. Employees are expected to be honest and take full responsibility for their actions. Cashiering experience is also desired.
