Job Summary
The Hong Laboratory is located within the Skaggs Pharmacy Research building at the University of Utah. The Hong Lab is focused on the microdomain regulation in cardiac cells to develop new therapies for heart failure. We are looking for an exceptional individual who wants to work in a highly supportive research environment and be involved in high impact research projects. The scientist will perform and train junior researchers in the lab technical procedures including procedures related to understanding the molecular mechanisms and alterations in cardiac metabolisms during heart failure progression, as well as the development and maintenance of preclinical rodent and large animal models in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles.
Responsibilities
1. Perform laboratory research with minimal supervision from supervisor.
2. Train junior personnel in the lab.
3. Will supervise the care of research animals including rodents and large animals; prepare regulatory documents, perform animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
3. Obtain and analyzes data, makes statistical calculations, and prepares reports summarizing results. Maintains a detailed research record. Attend laboratory meeting and present data.
4. Ordering supplies and materials for research.
6. Assist supervisor in preparing scientific manuscript and grant submission.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific discipline in a related field plus four years of experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences
The preferred candidate will 1) have a Doctor’s degree with postdoctoral training in Biology, Physiology, or other scientific discipline or extensive wet-lab research experience in the biomedical field; 2) have background in muscle biology, cardiac physiology, and/or metabolism; 3) have experience with handling laboratory animals; 4) have experience in advanced fluorescent imaging techniques; 5) have effective communication and writing skills; 6) experience in lab management is preferred.
