The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) to provide mental and behavioral health care at a variety of practice sites including but not limited to:, South Jordan Health Center, Impact Mental Health, Juvenile Justice, and others.
This position is within the College of Nursing’s PMHNP Faculty Practice. We are a dynamic team of PMHNP’s who are committed to excellence, innovation, and mentoring future PMHNPs. We practice in a variety of settings, and enjoy a large degree of self-determination. Most clinics are open during the day, M-F. There may be call, depending on the clinic’s needs. We manage our own patient panel, but as part of a supportive team, we often collaborate.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at the work site if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.
Position Summary: The PMHNPs hired will: provide mental health services in a clinical practice setting. They will demonstrate psychiatric advanced practice nursing skills in health promotion, diagnosis and treatment; provide and manage pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies; provide and manage therapeutic counseling and related interventions; and use the process of assessment, diagnosis, management, and evaluation to provide evidenced-based care to address the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients.
The position requires a considerable degree of independent skills and judgment necessary to monitor and respond to changes in patients’ condition, as well as critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision-making to help patients across the lifespan achieve, maintain, and restore health. Engagement in clinical education through PMHNP student precepting is an expectation of the position.
Principle Functions and major areas of responsibility include:
1. Perform accurate comprehensive health history, review of systems, and psychiatric mental health examination, concluding with diagnosis and treatment.
2. Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic procedures and tests, as indicated by the history and psychiatric mental health examination, to identify and assess psychiatric issues and health care needs.
3. Develop differential diagnoses on the basis of clinical and laboratory data.
4. Provide inpatient and outpatient psychiatric mental health care. Recognize emergency situations and initiate emergency care/triage.
5. Provide individualized client therapy and psycho-education for identified problems, disease states, and social/cultural situation.
6. Collaborate with other members of the health care team to coordinate care for clients.
7. Complete necessary documentation appropriately, including the billing encounter form.
8. Instruct, supervise/precept and serve as mentor to students and trainees in medicine and nursing as assigned. Ensure a positive learning environment.
9. Participate in inter-professional collaborative practice, sharing and receiving referrals for care with other professionals.
10. Participate in research/scholarship.
11. Contribute to site-specific quality improvement and care provision data collection efforts.
12. Maintain clinical competence by participating in and offering leadership for continuing education activities.

Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah. Nationally certified as a Nurse Practitioner as required under State Law. Certification in BLS may is required. Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area; and demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills are required.
Utah State prescriptive privileges preferred.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master’s degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master’s degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. • Licensure to practice as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
• Utah State prescriptive privileges preferred.
• Experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds, and possess a [strong or demonstrated] commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students.
• Graduation from an accredited College or School of Nursing as a PMHNP . Doctor of Nursing Practice ( DNP ) degree preferred.
• Individuals who are licensed and certified as a psychiatric mental health APRN /Clinical Nurse Specialist will be considered.
• Excellent clinical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with patients and other members of the health care and academic team are critical to success.
