Job Summary

The Frost lab has an opening for an enthusiastic individual interested in conducting cutting edge science in a fast-paced, systems neurobiology laboratory. We are interested in understanding how cortical activity underlying behavior is organized. We use a variety of in vivo imaging and recording techniques to monitor the activity of cortical neurons during behavior. The candidate will conduct imaging recordings and behavioral assays under the supervision of the principal investigators.

Responsibilities

Performs technical surgical procedures in rodents

Performs behavioral assays, analyzes resulting behavioral and physiologic data

Operates specialized laboratory instruments

Maintains meticulous records in laboratory notebooks

Performs analysis of datasets in MATLAB or Python and presents results to the group

Assists with animal husbandry

With increasing experience may be involved in training incoming personnel

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Seldom: Exposure to animals.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

One year full-time laboratory experience or equivalency required (1 year full-time lab equivalency equals successful completion of 2 semesters laboratory (college) course work) ; knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology as well as knowledge of chemical and physical properties of materials or substances and appropriate specimen handling techniques required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences

Bachelor’s or Masters degree in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience or related scientific discipline. Prior experience performing behavioral assays. Experience performing electrophysiological or imaging techniques would be helpful. Demonstrated knowledge of MATLAB or other programming language. Team orientation, organizational skills and effective communication skills are required. We are looking for motivated, intellectually curious individuals who are flexible thinkers and willing to learn and teach others.
