Job Summary

This project combines the activities of two complementary programs that bringSTEMeducation programs to adult and juvenile people who are incarcerated in Utah: 1)INSPIRE(Initiative to bring Science Programs to the Incarcerated) and 2) theSTEMCommunity Alliance Program for Youth in Care (STEMCAP).

Education for the incarcerated reduces the probability of recidivism and increases the probability of post-release employment. The presence of scientists who can directly and experientially present the content and process of the science enterprise, and inform them of jobs related to science can inspire and motivate these populations.INSPIREwas established in 2013 to bring science lectures, conservation workshops, and nature/nature imagery to adult offenders at the Draper State Prison and the Salt Lake County Jail. Since 2016, the Utah State board of Education Youth in Care Program (USBE-YOC) has partnered with the Department of Biology’s to createSTEMCAP, which implements educational lectures and workshops for Utah youth in custody. In July of 2018, the program has brought experts in science, the arts, and culture to increase awareness of, interest in, and the capacity to achieve inSTEMtopics; to enhance educational self-discovery, and provide a constructive creative outlet for youth participants. Activities of both programs are formally evaluated to provide information to other programs involving education and the incarcerated.

Responsibilities

Essential functions include:

1.Oversee administrative matters and operations; contribute to strategic planning; with Project Director, provide oversight for all activities.

2.Identify and establish community partnerships specific to program needs.

3.Acts as a liaison between internal and external constituencies; serves as a project representative.

4.Work alongside UU faculty, graduate students, and staff and external project partners to create and facilitate effective programming.

5.Develop and maintain databases and records.

6.Assist Project Director in Institutional Research Board document maintenance.

7.Forecast and monitor the program budget.

8.Assist in preparing grant proposal reports, protocols, and publications.

9.Manage day-to-day work of Program Coordinator

10.Work with Program Coordinator in updating and maintaining web and social media content

11.Assist with other job functions as needed, including office tasks, additional lecture and event coordination, communication, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years of related experience or equivalency. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Preferences

Minimum/Required Qualifications

1.Bachelor’s degree in science education, science communication, or related field, with related experience. A Masters of Ph.D. in natural, learning, social ,or applied sciences is preferred.

2.Demonstrated experience coordinating complex projects with multiple partners.

3.Demonstrated experience in assisting and conducting research.

4.Demonstrated ability using qualitative and quantitative approaches to understanding social science data.

5.Excellent oral and written communication skills.

6.Experience working with “STEM-disenfranchised” populations preferred.
