Job Summary

The STEM Community Alliance Program for Youth-In-Custody ( STEMCAP ) aims to inspire youth who are currently in state custody to self-identify with the enterprise of science and encourage them to learn and contribute to science, nature protection, and the STEM workforce. Since 2017, the Utah State Board of Education Youth-In-Custody Program ( USBE - YIC ) has partnered with the University of Utah’s School of Biological Science to create STEMCAP , which implements educational presentations and hands-on workshops for Utah Youth-In-Custody. The program has partnered with experts in science, the arts, and the humanities to increase awareness of, interest in, and the capacity to respond to STEM topics through various media. STEMCAP is also aimed at enhancing educational self-discovery and providing a constructive, creative outlet for youth participants. We offer long-term conservation and ecological restoration projects that allow YIC to get involved with local conservation efforts. To date, these projects have tasked students with growing milkweed for out-planting throughout Salt Lake Valley and with processing seeds for the Salt Lake City Public Library’s Seed Library. The Conservation Project Coordinator will report to Laura George, STEMCAP Program Manager, with oversight from Nalini Nadkarni, the STEMCAP Program Director.

This position is currently guaranteed funding through June 31st, 2022 with a strong possibility of continued funding through June 31st, 2025.

Responsibilities

1. Schedule meetings with local and regional conservationists and conservation groups.

2. Research and contact local organizations to build new conservation partnerships.

3. Oversee on-the-ground progress of long-term conservation projects by checking on plants, ensuring greenhouse is functioning properly, checking in with center staff to monitor youth progress, and care of plants and other project materials.

4. Work with STEMCAP Program Coordinator to order all conservation project supplies.

5. Attend pre-workshop meetings and provide input, guidance, and support for conservation project presenters to create workshops for STEMCAP audiences.

6. With STEMCAP Manager oversight, create educational reading packets related to conservation projects and individual conservation workshops.

7. Assist in organizing and maintaining data, presentations, and other STEMCAP conservation project files and to make those accessible internally and externally, as appropriate.

8. Coordinate with presenters to gather presentation materials and presenter biographies for the STEMCAP website.

9. Facilitate transportation for conservation presenters to STEMCAP workshops in Salt Lake County, Davis County, and Utah County.

10. Attend and document conservation workshops and events.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education) required. Two years of related experience, ability to use logic and reasoning to prioritize tasks, expertise using MS Office software, and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Database experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be preferred.

Preferences

1. Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, science education, science communication, or related field (OR currently majoring in related field), with one year of related experience.

2. Exceptionally well organized and able to keep track of multiple deadlines and competing priorities.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and collaborative working skills.

4. Demonstrated experience in file management.

5. Demonstrated experience in science communication or public engagement of science.

6. Experience with hands-on conservation work and/or previous course work in conservation preferred.

7. Experience in educational settings preferred.
