Job Summary

The Round Lab at the Huntsman Cancer Institute is looking for a highly motivated PhD level researcher to to study prophages found within Clostridia bacteria. We have published that Clostridia are important gut bacteria to protect from obesity and metabolic syndrome. Using metagenomic sequencing we have identified the expression of several prophage elements.

The Round Lab is a part of the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Department of Pathology at the University of Utah, School of Medicine. The open position provides an opportunity for postdoctoral training in a vibrant and highly collaborative setting. The work seeks to advance our understanding of the interaction between the microbiota and the immune system as it applies to obesity and metabolic syndrome. This will entail the design and execution of experiments as well as the presentation of key findings in internal and external forums such as campus seminars, international meetings and in published form. There will be opportunities to develop leadership and independence along lab related research themes. The position will commence on or before Jan 1, 2021 .

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at HCI if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

Responsibilities

Qualifications:

•PhD in molecular biology, cellular biology, microbiology or immunology

•Research experience in a breadth of standard molecular and cellular biology techniques

•Ability to design and execute well controlled experiments independently

•Working with bacteriophages

Responsibilities:

•Day-to-day management of projects in consultation with the principal investigator including development of hypotheses relevant to the themes of the lab, procurement of materials, development of experimental approaches, execution of experiments, detailed record keeping, analysis and reporting

•Contribution to applications for external funding

•Participation in lab upkeep and organization

•Participation in lab compliance with university, state and federal guidelines

•Participation in biweekly lab meetings and seminars

•Mentoring junior personnel

•Collaboration with/facilitation of other researchers in the lab
