The Department of Surgery at University of Utah Health highly values Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) in our clinical operations in both inpatient and ambulatory practice. The Division of General Surgery, Surgical ICU is looking for an Advanced Practice Clinician (NP or PA) who is a patient focused, self-motivated provider who has the ability to work effectively in a team environment. The APC in the Division of General Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides care to critically ill patients most of whom are post op or trauma patients. The provider will care for critically ill patients in a 12 bed ICU alongside residents, medical students, APC students, fellows, and faculty attending physicians.

This position is Category I: Mandatory Required on Campus or at Health Care Facilities.


Bedside care of critically ill patients in a 12 bed Surgical ICU .

Procedures: Based on need, training, and proficiency.

Participate in team meetings, education conferences, creation of SICU APC and Resident call schedules, as well as opportunities for research and QI project involvement.

Collaborate with multiple team members to ensure the best outcomes possible.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Minimum Qualifications

Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah. Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Utah State prescriptive privileges preferred.

To obtain licensure requires graduation from an ARC -PA approved/accredited Physician Assistant program. Specialty experience preferred on a position by position basis. UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Critical care experience preferred but not required, inpatient experience preferred.
