Job Summary

Residents will rotate through a variety of clinical environments focusing on critical care medicine with a special emphasis on respiratory failure and multi-organ failure related to sepsis. Residents will train for three to six months based on previous experience and receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program. Training rotations include Surgical Critical Care, Medical Critical Care, Oncologic Critical Care, and Anesthesia. Other rotations may include Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Radiology, Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Infectious Disease and Palliative Care. Residents will be imbedded within academic teams at the University of Utah Hospital and affiliates. Hours vary based on rotations typically average 40 to 80 hours per week. Upon completion of the residency, residents will be required to complete a two year commitment at the University of Utah’s MedicalICU. The resident will join a team of APCs who provide care for patients in a mixed medicalICUas a full time employee.

A stipend equivalent to $50,000/year will be provided for the 4-6 months of residency complete with benefits. Upon completion of the residency, the PA or NP will be transitioned to a full time salary based on years of experience as an Advanced Practice Clinician. Experienced providers may have a shortened training period depending on clinical acumen during the residency.

Responsibilities

• Obtain medical histories

• Conduct physical exams

• Diagnose and treat disease

• Order and interpret tests

• Prescribe medications

• Conduct patient and family discussions regarding goals of care

• Develop strategies for symptom management

• Perform advanced clinical procedures (intubations, placement of central lines, art lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, etc.)

• Effective communication with attending critical care faculty

• Part of the University of Utah Hospital System

• 25 bed unit staffed by Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialists

• Patient care provided by Advanced Practice Clinicians (PAs, NPs)

• MedicalICUfor patients with various clinical conditions

• Shift work with average 13-15, 12 hour shifts per month (days and nights)

• Goal directed multidisciplinary care, requires excellent communication skills

•APCgroup performs allICUprocedures, responds to codes in the hospital, performsICUconsults

Minimum Qualifications

Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah. Certification inACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLSmay be required by your department or by privileging criteria. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Utah State prescriptive privileges preferred.

To obtain licensure requires graduation from anARC-PA approved/accredited Physician Assistant program. Specialty experience preferred on a position by position basis.UHPPM1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
