The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for an Outpatient Services Specialist. The incumbent makes a difference for patients and their families in outpatient care clinics at Primary Children’s Hospital by maximizing efficiency through facilitating and ensuring the accuracy of the information flow between medical staff and subspecialty divisions.
The Outpatient Services Specialist schedules patients for pediatric subspecialty clinics, triaging patient concerns in a fast-paced team environment; and processes patient referrals. This position is housed in a call center, separate from clinic locations.

1.Answers and triages a high volume of incoming calls from parents, physicians, pharmacies, labs, etc.
2.Quickly and effectively switches between calls and other assigned tasks.
3.Schedules and registers patients for multiple subspecialty clinics in the Department of Pediatrics, including complex coordination of various specialties and testing.
4.Contacts patients for rescheduling, missed appointments and appointment reminders.
5.Corresponds with physicians and staff via email, phone, and electronic medical records.
6.Maintains and utilizes organized work lists, including reminder calls, wait lists, referrals, registration, insurance verification, and filling clinics.
7.Communicates with patients/parents in a confidential, professional manner using empathy, tact and diplomacy.
8.Complies with Federal and University privacy guidelines, includingHIPAA, in entering health information into electronic medical records.
9.Performs other scheduling related duties as assigned.
1.Verifies patient registration by obtaining current patient demographics and insurance information. Schedules patient appointments related to referrals.
2.Enters referrals into electronic medical records for tracking and reporting purposes.
3.Reviews and verifies communications that have been received and/or delivered for entered referrals.
4.Obtains records for upcoming patient appointments.
5.Performs other referral related duties as assigned.

One year of continuous office experience or equivalency; basic computer skills; and successful completion of a medical terminology course provided by the hospital within the first year of employment required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are also required.
Experience withICD-9 andCPT4 coding may be preferred.
One year experience in patient registration, admitting or related work may be preferred.
