This position is responsible for promoting excellence in patient care by advancing quality and scope of practice through clinical education. The incumbent acts in conjunction with the Clinical Staff Education Manager in planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating intra/inter-departmental activities. With input from the manger, the NPD Lead Specialist is responsible for administrative decisions in the absence of the manager. Delivers training and education and represents Clinical Staff Education with system level perspectives in interdepartmental meetings. This position supervises employees or processes by coordinating and overseeing work assignments. Participates in the interview process as well as assesses, develops and provides training for new and existing employees. This position has the authority to determine appropriate training needs and works in conjunction with the manager to initiate disciplinary action for assigned areas. This position may be required to provide direct patient care as needed by area of assignment. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law. This position carries the expectation to be competent and work alongside the unit educator at the bedside.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the management of the department which involves development of budget, interviewing, hiring and orienting of new staff.

  • Assists with employee evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary processes to align employee performance and behaviors.

  • Accountable for the accurate reporting of time and attendance and completion of delegated duties and assignments of direct reports.

  • Contributes in creating the vision, strategy and goals for the department.

  • Works in collaboration with manager and director to keep vision, strategy, and goals aligned.

  • Mentors and coaches Nurse Educators through role development, ongoing education and oversight of unit education activities.

  • Assesses areas of personal and professional growth for team members.

  • Functions as a resource/consultant for new employees, students, clinical departments, educators and leaders.

  • Facilitates standardization of hospital education initiatives in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

  • Liaison with other organizations as needed in providing outreach education and clinical training for community partners.

  • Advances the profession through publications, presentations and scholarly work.

  • Anticipates and articulates emerging organizational needs.

  • Identifies organizational improvement strategies through the evaluation of data and effectiveness of interventions.

  • Provides consultation to influence plans and effect change.

  • Drives operations in alignment of goals and strategies of the department, service line and organization policies and procedures.

  • Represents the department and organization's educational interests through committees, task force and project participation.

  • Supports and promotes excellence in customer/guest relations. Troubleshoots and resolves customer concerns.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience in organizing and conducting formal adult education programs.

  • Demonstrated teaching, coordination and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in relevant software applications.

  • Ability to supervise independently, demonstrate higher level problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to anticipate needs and guide the educational programs for clinical staff.

  • Acts as catalyst for change and interacts with the unit/department, service line and ancillary departments.

  • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrate and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide clinical education to the staff on his or her assigned area or project.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Master's degree in education or related and approved field - If graduate degree is in a related field, the baccalaureate degree must be in nursing.

  • 2 years practicing RN.

  • 5 or more years of applicable education-related experience.

  • 2 years of progressive leadership experience.

  • Must have completed the NPD competency checklist or equivalent.

  • NPD Certification within 1 year of hire.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • 4 years as a clinical educator.

  • 2 years as educator in specialty.

  • Certification in clinical specialty.

  • Provider and/or instructor certification relevant to area of specialty.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
