This Nurse Practitioner, Oncology provides primary care and treatment to cancer patients in a clinic or hospital unit. This position is involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of a seamless specialist service, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. The Nurse Practitioner, Oncology is responsible for Advance Care Planning and Goals of Care conversations with patients and their families. This position is responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service, as well as policies, protocols, guidelines and service developments. This position ensures the safety and well-being of service users, working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.

This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.

  • Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient's condition.

  • Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.

  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient's clinical problems and health care needs.

  • Performs selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence.

  • Performs other therapeutic or corrective measures as indicated, including urgent care interventions as necessary.

  • Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.

  • Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.

  • Participates in quality improvement activities.

  • Counsels patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance.

  • Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.

  • Collaborates, when necessary, with Home Health Nursing Staff, hospital nursing staff, Palliative care physicians, and others, to discuss identified patient needs and order medication adjustments, treatments or other care for patients.

  • Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication.

  • Develops and evaluates assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention.

  • May visit patients in their own home to provide initial assessment and ongoing assessment and treatment plans in the patient's home initiating treatment plans for the patient's care needs and using advanced clinical skills: assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans, depending on area of assignment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.

  • Utah State prescriptive privileges.

  • Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.

  • UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
