Job Summary

The manager of the nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR ) laboratory will ensure efficient operation of the instruments operating in the NMR Facility.

Key responsibilities of the position include maintenance of an efficient high-resolution solution NMR laboratory and to provide training to the broad user group that includes faculty, postdoctoral associates, and both graduate and undergraduate students, as well as visiting scholars.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at work site if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

Responsibilities

1. Develops training protocols and trains graduate students, post doctoral scholars, and other research personnel in the use of magnetic resonance spectrometers. Provides support for classroom use of magnetic resonance facilities including development of experiments and protocols for classroom use. Teaches informal and formal classes in the theory and practice of magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

2. Assumes overall responsibility for the administration of magnetic resonance spectroscopy facility under the direction of the technical services committee. Operates magnetic resonance spectrometers to ensure that they are performing within specification. Assists in diagnosing problems with magnetic resonance spectrometers and related equipment, including computers and local area networks, and coordinates repairs. Performs system administration of computers and networks associated with magnetic resonance spectrometers. Coordinates and assists in maintenance of the cryogens in the superconducting magnet systems. Actively participates in the identification of upgrades to NMR instruments and related systems.

3. Provides consultation on research problems for users of magnetic resonance facility. Enters into collaborative research projects with groups and individuals where magnetic resonance expertise is required.

4. Participates in writing grant proposals for maintaining magnetic resonance facilities at state-of-the-art level, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Preferences

Preference will be given for a Ph.D. in the natural sciences or engineering, five years of practical experimental NMR experience including hands on experience with modern solution NMR systems and multinuclear probes.

Experience in UNIX / LINUX operating systems is essential.

Basic electrical engineering skills and experience with computer programming languages is highly desirable.

Practical expertise in other instrumentation, including electron paramagnetic resonance ( EPR ) and optical spectroscopy will be considered to be useful additional skills.

In addition, demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with researcher with a wide variety of prior training are essential.
