University of Utah Health Network Engineer III (Wireless Engineer) in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

University of Utah Health has an opportunity available for a Senior Wireless Network Engineer to join the wireless group on the network team. The engineer will share responsibility for designing, troubleshooting, and securing a growing enterprise wireless LAN with over 6,500 wireless access points and 250+ buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Designs and plans network communications systems.

  • Provides specifications and detailed schematics for network architecture.

  • Provides specific detailed information for hardware and software selection, implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to meet business needs, including present and future capacity requirements.

  • Conducts testing of network design.

  • Maintains technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, such as routers, firewalls, gateways, etc.

  • Evaluates and reports on new communications technologies to enhance capabilities of the network.

  • Performs a full range of complex network designs encompassing multiple technologies within a single network.

  • Evaluates new network technologies and makes recommendations to project managers regarding the integration of these technologies into the existing network.

  • Plans new configuration for integration into the network, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being added to the network and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance.

  • Prepares technical proposals for presentation to the Sponsor's engineering review boards for adding new technologies to the network.

  • Performs a full range of upgrades to the existing network architecture.

  • Reviews user requests for upgrades or additions to the network to assess impact on network performance and provides advice and guidance on the most practical technical approach to meeting user requirements.

  • Proposes upgrades to existing network configurations, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being upgraded and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance.

  • Utilizes complex network analysis tools to identify and correct problems in the network.

  • Prepares troubleshooting procedures for restoring the network to optimal performance levels.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must be a self-motivated, eager learner with excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be a team player with a collaborative mentality and demonstrated ability to complete projects and assignments on-time and in-line with best practices.

  • Experience measuring RF attenuation through obstacles, including walls, doors, windows, etc.

  • Understands AP-on-a-stick (APoas) survey methodology and incorporates gathered data to build accurate predictive wireless designs using Ekahau ESS, AirMagnet Survey Pro, or similar.

  • Experience performing multi-floor wireless site surveys using Ekahau Site Survey and/or Air Magnet.

  • In-depth understanding of common Wi-Fi terms like RSSI, CCI, RRM, DCA, RTLS, BYOD, etc.

  • Knowledgeable regarding wireless access point and controller features, functions, and capabilities.

  • Experience configuring, upgrading and maintaining lightweight or autonomous wireless access points and wireless LAN controllers (WLCs) for mission critical, highly available business environments.

  • Expertise implementing and troubleshooting voice-over-Wi-Fi in healthcare environments.

  • Experience optimizing and maintaining Cisco Prime, or other wireless network monitoring/management platforms for large enterprise organizations.

  • Ability to automate processes with scripts and API’s

  • Thorough understanding of 802.11 protocol and enterprise wireless LAN architecture.

  • Solid understanding of 802.1X authentication, common EAP methods, and RADIUS servers

  • Familiar with NAC, BYOD, PKI, and onboarding processes, products like Cisco ISE and Cloudpath ES and application of such in Healthcare and Higher education environments.

  • Detailed understanding of DHCP servers, process, configuration options, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience using protocol analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and other industry tools including Omnipeek, Wireshark, Metageek, and Wi-Fi Explorer Pro in local and remote scenarios.

  • Solid routing and switching background in large campus environments.

  • Demonstrates mastery in enterprise wireless LAN design, troubleshooting, and security.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in technical discipline such as Electrical Engineer, Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems or Software Engineering or equivalent.

  • Three years industry experience in a similar environment.

Qualifications (Preferred)

Preferred

  • CWDP, CWAP, CWSP, CWNE, CCNP-Wireless, CCIE-Wireless

  • ECSE, CWNA, or CCNA-Wireless

  • 10+ years industry experience in a similar environment
