This position provides coordination and continuity of patient care by assisting with the organization of required health care services. This position will be responsible for using specialized skills in assisting with MOHS surgery within the dermatology clinics. The position will also ensure optimal, efficient flow of patients while ensuring high quality of service. It will also serve as a principal EpicCare super user. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers needed medical information such as records, slides, films and ancillary tests to assist in the coordination of patient needs.

  • Acts as a liaison with patients, outside healthcare professionals and ancillary hospital departments.

  • Receives, responds to and directs patient communications including phone calls, emails and other interactions.

  • Assesses patient questions and ensures the appropriate coordination of the patient experience. Directs the scheduling of patient appointments with providers and ancillary services.

  • Processes and distributes all transcribed notes, letters and reports.

  • Reviews clinics ahead of time to ensure all orders and imaging are properly scheduled prior to the patient’s visits.

  • Reviews and prepares patient paperwork, reviewing path reports and notations to determine the site(s) to be addressed in surgery.

  • May assist patients and their families by providing educational material and general health information using the Electronic Medical Record.

  • Facilitates improvement projects within clinic in coordination with the clinic care team.

  • Review clinical protocols with manager throughout the year to ensure safety is upheld for patients and clinical staff.

  • Advocates for efficient clinical workflow which may include patient coordination/rescheduling and pre-visit planning with the providers.

  • Coordinate referrals and obtain pre-authorization from insurance companies for procedures and treatments.

  • May complete patient registration, assists patient with co-pays and account balances, and reconcile daily cash reports.

  • May assist in procurement of the appropriate clinic supplies and equipment.

  • Will have to perform other administrative duties, projects and committee assignments as needed.

  • Performs as a Medical Assistant in clinic.

  • Verifies and arranges all supplies and instruments ensuring the surgical trays are setup for daily procedures. Maintains trays for sterilization.

  • Conducts MOHS surgical procedures, wound care, pre/post wound procedures, and other highly skilled dermatology related procedures.

  • Ensures efficient clinic workflow by pre-planning patient visits and reviewing the daily schedule.

  • Serves as a primary preceptor for new staff and provides ongoing support and mentoring for all clinical staff.

  • Performs as the principal EpicCare super-user providing support and training for staff and providers and attends ongoing training and updates, as available.

  • Performs medical scribes transcription related tasks such as inputting patient data, recording examination results, chart preparation in an accurate and thorough manner.

  • Ability to organize complex appointments for each patient who requires the coordination of multiple healthcare professional schedules.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills including critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

  • Exhibits behavior qualities as defined in the PROMISE standards.

  • Ability to prioritize patient flow and the needs of the clinic.

  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.

  • Ability to understand a pathology report and different types of tumors addressed with MOHS surgery.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to review data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in computer programs such as EpicCare or any other clinical program.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Two or more years of Mohs Surgical experience at Huntsman Cancer Hospital.

Licenses Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

  • One of the following

  • Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.

  • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT

  • Currently credentialed in ABR-OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.

  • Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.

  • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.

  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA

  • Current certification as a NRCMA - Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.

  • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
