Job Summary

This is a full time position in a Pediatric General Surgery clinic. We have two locations – Primary Children’s Hospital (main campus) and an extension of Primary Children’s Hospital located at Riverton on Mondays and Fridays. If hired, you would be required to rotate occasionally out to Riverton on Mondays and Fridays.

This position integrates Medical Assistant skills such as taking vitals, rooming patients, entering patient information into Medical Record charts and assisting surgeons as needed with patients from time to time along with Medical Secretary duties such as answering phones, making clinic appointments, reviewing schedules, faxing, taking copayments and scanning medical records into the patient’s chart.

The Pediatric General Surgery clinic is a high pace, busy clinic that sees a verity of patients which requires attention to detail, triaging, staying calm to assist parents over the phone and in person and evaluate the urgency of the need to give exceptional patient care.

If hired, you will be the main person patients interact with over the phone and in person. You will be required to do a verity of tasks to help the flow of clinic, protect the surgeon’s time and assist with patient care.

Responsibilities

1.Performs as the principal Medical Assistant in the clinic. Leads and assist Medical Secretaries with triaging and rooming patients.

2.Maintains and ensures all clinic rooms are properly stocked, supplies are ordered, rooms are properly cleaned after each visit and communicates with the providers on patient’s needs.

3.Review faxes to ensure all orders are properly distributed to nurses, providers and Medical Secretaries.

4.Reviews clinics ahead of time to ensure all orders and imaging are properly scheduled prior to the patient’s visits.

5.Verify communication with providers has occurred and complete regarding patients prior to the patient’s visit.

6.Review clinical protocols with manager throughout the year to ensure safety is upheld for patients and clinical staff.

7.Advocates for efficient clinical work flow which may include patient coordination/rescheduling, daily schedule review, team huddles and pre-visit planning with the provider, nurses and manager.

8.Serves as a primary preceptor for new staff as needed.

9.Provides ongoing support and mentoring for all clinical staff.

10.May coordinate referrals and obtain pro-authorizations from insurances companies for procedures and treatment.

11.Will have to complete patient registration, assists patients with co-pays and account balances and reconcile daily cash reports.

12.Will have to perform other administrative/secretarial duties, projects and committee assignments as assigned.

13.Attend and complete mandatory trainings including, infection control safety,CPR, equipment usage and procedures according to the hospital and department policies.

14.Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinical procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure and responses to standardized medical history questions on patients ranging from 0 – 18 years of age. Must be familiar with pediatric rates on all vital signs.

15.Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member. This includes over the phone and in person.

16.Be able to perform additional skills such as suture removal.

17.Be willing to learn new skills that fall under your license that will support our patient population.

18.Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assists with procedures.

19.Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment reporting outdated supplies, stock levels and restock set levels of items and necessary equipment repairs.

20.Assists in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patient’s records, locating and compiling department charts, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes.

21.May perform other duties based on department assigned.

22.May assist patient and family education by providing educational material and general health information using the Electronic Medical Record.

23.Conducts quality assurance testing prior to solution deployment to ensure functionality is working as designed.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program or current certification as anEMT- Intermediate in the state of Utah is required. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire; demonstrated phlebotomy skills and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic’s specialty skills within six weeks of hire is required. Specialty skills may not be performed until after the new hire completes competency testing.

Hiring department may prefer Medical Assistant Certification or Registration.

Preferences

Pediatric Surgery is seeking someone with a positive attitude, good work ethic, willing to learn new things, ability to multi-task and with strong computer skills. Experience working with patients, medical charting experience and Meaningful Use knowledge.

Also preferred:

Knowledgeable inEPIC, Help2 and iCentra EMRs

Speaks fluent Spanish

Certified as a Medical Spanish Interpreter

Problem Solving:

Demonstrated leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills are essential to the position in order to prioritize patient flow and the needs of the clinic, and assist providers by providing patient care under the supervision of a licensed clinician.
