University of Utah Health Medical Assistant (MA) Patient Coordinator - GI Clinic in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

This position is responsible for the coordination of all aspects of the patient experience. The Patient Coordinator works with various providers and services to ensure that new patients are assimilated into the system. This position is responsible to entry orders.

  • Responsible for receiving, responding to, and directing patient communications, including phone calls, emails, and other interactions.

  • Assesses patient questions and ensures the appropriate coordination of the patient experience. Directs the scheduling of patient appointments with providers and ancillary services.

  • Educates patients about available resources and what to expect during their visit.

  • Coordinates referrals from physicians and self-referred patients.

  • Gathers needed medical information such as records, slides, films, and ancillary tests to assist in the coordination of patient needs.

  • Ensures insurance coverage, resolves any issues with coverage, and escalates complicated issues to appropriate financial counselor.

  • Monitors program performance and coordinates any programmatic development within the team.

  • May assist clinical staff in patient procedures in accordance with the incumbent's licensure, as required by the specific department.

  • May coordinate treatment planning conferences, logistics, presentations, and associated CME requirements.

  • May act as a liaison with other care groups such as social work, financial counseling and nutrition to facilitate the patient intake process.

  • May assist in the coordination of seminars and community outreach activities.

  • May assist in the procurement of the appropriate patient supplies and equipment.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and follow-through skills.

  • Ability to be motivated with attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently and independently, demonstrating a passion for providing excellent customer service.

  • Ability to learn new applications and software, procedures and processes.

  • Ability to assimilate data from various sources.

  • Ability to display active listening and verbalize empathy while developing relationships with patients, guests and coworkers.

  • Able to prioritize and multi-task in a fast paced environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure that patient information is guarded and respected.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in EHR order entry in the following areas: anatomy and physiology, basic laboratory values, critical thinking, electronic health records, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), medical terminology and pharmacology.


Qualifications Required

  • Associate's degree in a Health Care, Business, Communications, a related field, or the equivalency.

  • Two years of applicable experience.

Licenses Required

  • One of the following

  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA

  • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.

  • Current certification as a NRCMA - Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.

  • Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.

  • Current licensure to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of Utah.

  • Currently credentialed in ABR-OE (Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.

  • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT

  • Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.

  • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.


  • Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department._

Qualifications (Preferred)


  • Competency in Epic charting and scheduling.

  • Some departments may prefer experience in a high volume clinical setting or multidisciplinary clinics or working with high-acuity, complex patients.
