The College of Mines and Earth Sciences is seeking a Strategic Communications Specialist to evaluate, coordinate and enhance its marketing and communications efforts. The individual will perform a variety of writing, design, and project management tasks while using good judgement and strong interpersonal skills to plan and execute marketing and communications strategies. The position will utilize traditional and electronic methods to communicate with a variety of audiences including prospective students, current students, alumni, donors, government, industry partners and the general public.
The individual will utilize marketing and communications strategies to increase program awareness, aid in student recruitment and generate engagement with alumni and industry partners. They will collaborate closely with program directors, faculty, and other staff to work toward enrollment goals, college strategic priorities and outreach. The incumbent should offer marketing recommendations based on data to discover target audiences, create appropriate messaging, and develop a college marketing plan.
Primary areas of responsibility
1. Evaluate current marketing strategies and give recommendations for improvement.
2. Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy for the college.
3. Create and implement marketing communication projects that include public relations, advertising, creating brand awareness, and special events management.
4. Communicate college information to multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.
5. Analyze application data to better target marketing efforts and find new audiences.
6. Take lead role in executing on marketing strategies and plans for multiple target audiences.
7. May perform other related technical duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree English, Journalism, Communications, or related field plus 3 years of related experience, or equivalency; excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills; familiarity with a variety of computer software; project management and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both individually and in a team setting.
Some areas may require additional experience with specific computer systems and may require skills in interviewing, ad copy writing, editing, photography, web writing, graphic design, audio & video production, and oral presentation.
Master’s degree in a related field may be preferred.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preference will be given to those with a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences or aSTEMrelated field.
Experience working with K-12 is desirable but not required
Proven success with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, web design, etc.
Ability to forecast and identify trends and challenges and manage them effectively.
Self-starter, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously with varying levels of supervision.
