University of Utah Health Manager, Behavioral Sciences - HMHI Youth Residential Treatment (YRT) in Salt Lake City, Utah


University of Utah Health and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI, formerly the University Neuropsychiatric Institute or UNI) are seeking a new Behavioral Sciences Program Manager (with 4+ years of leadership experience, and current licensure) for our Youth Residential Treatment program in South Salt Lake!

Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Director, the Behavioral Sciences Manager will coordinate this facility’s behavioral health program. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling all aspects of the assigned department's internal and external customer service, as well as the personnel and financial management operations. The incumbent acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers, and staff, to ensure continuity and quality of service and care.

The Youth Residential Treatment (YRT) program is a 16 bed, 24 hour residential treatment facility licensed to treat adolescent females, ages 13-17 (some clients in the program may be 18 years old when appropriate).

Our patients include teens who have a mental health diagnosis and require a safe, structured and secure setting. An individualized treatment program is created for each resident using the dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) model. Each patient receives individualized academic assessment and curriculum through our accredited, private school, University Academy.

Scope of responsibility includes:

• Administrative and clinical oversite of a 16 bed adolescent, female residential program (ages 13-17)

• Ensures compliance with Department of Human Services licensure

• Ensure compliance with CARF Accreditation

• Review all incoming referrals to determine clinical appropriateness for admission

• Coordinate of admits and triage

• Manage day to day operations including employee issues, safety, building and property integrity, crisis response and adherence to policy and procedures, coordination of training for all employees

• Posting, interviewing, hiring and management of all employees

• Oversee unit staffing schedule to ensure patient to staff ratio is met

• Supervision of clinical trainees including weekly supervision, co-signing notes, participating in sessions or meetings as needed

• Work closely with the University Academy educators to ensure clients’ education needs are being met

• Coverage for the clinical and administrative assistant when on vacation

• Oversee on-call coverage with taking call one-two weeks per month

• Facilitate/co-facilitate bi-weekly clinical groups

• Facilitate weekly staff meeting and rounds

• Participation in DBT Consult group and education/supervision of staff to ensure adherence to DBT principles

• Participation in monthly Youth Providers Meetings and bi-monthly management meeting at UNI Hospital

• Carry a client case load, as needed, which may include: individual/family/group therapy, crisis management/case management, team meetings/updates with the guardians, create individualized behavior plans

Supervision and oversight covers a total of 21 employees:

• 1 Psychology Post-Doctoral Resident

• 1 PRN Psychologist

• 1 Registered Nurse

• 15 psych techs

• 1 EVS employee

• 1 Administrative Assistant

Qualifications Required

  • Three years of more progressively responsible management experience.

Licenses Required

  • One of the following

  • Current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (L.C.S.W.) certificate for clinical practice in the State of Utah.

  • Current licensure as a Psychologist in the State of Utah.

  • Current licensure to practice as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (TRS) in the State of Utah.

  • Current licensure to practice as a Master Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (MTRS) in the State of Utah.

  • Current registration as an Art Therapist (ATR) with the American Art Therapy Association.

  • Current Music Therapy certification through the Board of Music Therapy (MT-BC)

Qualifications (Preferred)


  • Four years of more progressively responsible management experience.

  • Master's degree in a related area, or equivalency.
