Job Summary

Designs, fabricates and repairs essential equipment for the University of Utah to include scientific, technical, medical or maintenance requirements. : Candidate will work in the the HSC cores School of Medicine machine shop. Uses a variety of Machining and welding fabrication skills in designing, machining, fabrication, replication, modification, repairing mechanical devices/equipment used for research projects, medical , industrial equipment, fabricated assembles, stainless steel and Autoclavable polymer surgery specialty tools, microscope parts, orthopedic devices, non magnetic MRI phantoms, obsolete parts or equipment repair on a weekly basis. This is a highly creative, mostly non production environment.

This position is considered category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at the HSC Core Research Facility if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.


Designs and makes unique and highly specialized parts and devices for research and development departments by discussing the design needs with the person making the request and then applying journeyman machinist skills to produce the requested part or device. Makes specialized repair parts, rebuilds shafts, bearings and valves, by first dismantling machinery to discover the required maintenance, and then by performing the required machine work. Places the machinery back into service. Designs and makes special tools requested by maintenance departments by using machinist skills to determine the best design, proper materials and fabrication techniques necessary to ensure tools will work for their intended purpose. Performs specialty metalizing work by using specific equipment and techniques in rebuilding worn metal surfaces on shafts, valves and other metal parts subject to wear. By machining these parts back to normal shapes and tolerances, ensures continued use of original parts at lower costs than buying new parts. Orders parts for equipment repairs when more than machinery work is required to make equipment operable. May occasionally perform welding or silver soldering tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Journeyman machinist or equivalency required. A welding and silver soldering back ground and a working knowledge of Mill, Lathe, Drill Press, Shear, Brake and general shop machinery and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required. Dependent upon department of assignment, a valid Utah driver’s license may be required. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.


Technical diploma or Associates degree in machining , engineering or CAD design prefered but will substitute with right experience or competency level.

3 to 5 years experience in a machine shop environment required.

Manual and CNC Lathe and mill operation, setup, crashproofing experience required.

Knowledge of Autodesk Fusion 360 basic CAD modeling and CNC programming lathes and mills (prefered) but Solidworks or similar CAD / CAM system proficiency definitely required.

Ability to interact with on and off campus customers consulting on manufacturability, cost, design, etc. Creative economic design solutions is a strong part of the position.

Prefered skills:

Portfolio of Manufacturing projects and or demonstrated competency in machining and or CAD design highly prefered.

Experience with 3d printing, Cura software, using Stl files and Acrylic Laser cutting experience using Glowforge laser cutter, dxf files desirable but can train right candidate.

Basic knowledge of MIG , TIG and silver soldering with some experience highly desirable.

Demonstrated experience with wood working tools such as bandsaw, drill press , table saw ,routers sanders using plastics, PVC , HDPE , Delrin, foam and acrylic desirable but can train right candidate.

Extensive experience with machining metals, plastics, and other materials.


Designs and builds research devices, instruments and equipment in a machine shop based off customers drawings sketches blueprint solid model files or pictures

Consults with on and off campus researchers on projects and creates machining , fabrication solutions, assemblies and or devises.

Prepares cost estimates to build required items, gives technical advice and selects most appropriate components and parts.

Familiarity with CNC machines and conversion of CAD drawings for CNC .

Some experience with TIG and MIG welding of stainless steel /aluminum preferred but can train to do basic small weld jobs.

Demonstrable Experience with CAD software (Fusion 360 or Solidworks) to assist in the design of complex shapes of machined components.

Provides consultation on outside machining and fabrication services to help identify cost-effective solutions for certain machining or fabrication projects.

Works with Professors, scientists, engineers and on campus depts and off campus manufacturers to create solutions for experiments.

Proficient in machine shop equipment maintenance and proper usage.

Consults with Principal Investigators and other research personnel in order to identify the type of device or equipment needed to accomplish research goals and objectives.
