Job Summary

Red Butte Garden is seeking a Landscape Irrigation technician to maintain the Garden’s irrigation system and other water related systems.

Responsibilities

This position will be a part of the Garden’s irrigation team. The purpose of this position is to maintain the irrigation systems for all landscaped portions of Red Butte Garden, including turf, GH & indoor plants, and outdoor garden plantings, in manner that provides the water required for plant material to thrive without wasting water. This is accomplished by performing all aspects of: irrigation system diagnosis, repair, maintenance, design and installation, upgrading system to code’s, water management and water conservation. Assures work is performed in a manner that is safe for staff, volunteers and guests and avoids conflict with scheduled private and garden events.

Coordinates water application with Crewleaders in charge of each respective area.

Maintains other water related systems such as as outdoor drinking water fountains, decorative fountains, pond diversion system, seasonal startup and shutdown of the Amphitheater restrooms, and the interactive fountain in the Children’s Garden. Considered a ‘pool’ by the Salt Lake Valley Health Dept., maintenance of the Interactive fountain requires daily water inspection and management, and obtaining and maintaining a Registered Pool Operators License.

Assists with general garden maintenance as required. Performs snow removal duties in the winter.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years previous experience as a Ground Sprinkler Operator or equivalency; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. Completion of an approved apprenticeship program is preferred.

Preferences

A general understanding of irrigation system components, including back flow preventors, valves, pumps, controllers, pipe sizing and water flow, and drainage systems, etc.

Able to operate equipment common to the trade such as loader, backhoe, trencher, snowplow and various hand tools.

Experience with Irrigation system software strongly preferred.

Will be required to obtain and maintain a Registered Pool Operators certificate.

Knowledge or experience with irrigation auditing practices.
