Job Summary

The Zhang lab at the Department of Oncological Sciences (https://bioscience.utah.edu/faculty/zhang/index.php) is seeking an enthusiastic and exceptionally motivated scientist, with a BA/BS in biology or a related field, and with at least one year of laboratory experience in molecular and cellular biology, to assistant our research in 3D genomics and cancer biology. In addition to technical and scientific knowledge, this individual should have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, a working knowledge of computerized data handling, and the ability to perform meticulous record keeping. Candidates with plans to pursue cancer biology-related Ph.D. or M.D. degrees are strongly encouraged to apply.

A highly motivated laboratory technician is being sought to join a research team that applies 3D genomics approaches to investigate the interplay between cancer genome and epigenome. This individual will work with the Principal Investigator () using cutting-edge molecular biology and genomic techniques to investigate fundamental questions in cancer biology. The environment is highly collaborative, stimulating, and multi-disciplinary, and will provide a rich environment in which to advance skills in basic cancer biology.

The ability to master a variety of cellular and molecular biology techniques is essential for this role, as are good organizational and communication skills, the ability to work within a team, flexibility, and responsibility. Under the guidance of the research team, the ideal candidate will also be expected to collect data, interpret experimental results, and synthesize findings within the larger context of the project(s).

Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

- Tissue culture of human cancer cell lines

- DNA cloning and sequencing

- Design and use of reagents for genome engineering with CRISPR /Cas9 technology

- Extraction and analysis of DNA and RNA , including PCR , quantitative PCR , and sequencing

- Protein assays including immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation

- Epigenomics assays including ChIP-seq, ATAC -seq and HiChIP

- Presenting findings at internal meetings

- Maintenance of general lab supplies

- Maintenance of the physical environment of the lab

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
