Job Summary

Makes solutions for research laboratories under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. Collects and cleans/sterilizes labware.

Responsibilities

1. Prepares solutions of specific molarity and pH for Researchers’ and students’ research.

2. Properly sterilize solutions.

3. Pour bacteria plates.

4. Maintain running inventory of solutions and other reagents to keep them available to researcher.

5. Maintain inventory of reagents necessary to make all reagents for researcher.

6. Collects labware from labs in Human Genetics to clean with descaling solution, remove old labels and label

gum before washing and drying with laboratory grade dishwasher and dryer.

7. Sterilize specific labware by autoclave after preparing with sterile indicating tape and foil as needed.

8. Deliver sterile and non-sterile labware to labs.

9. Makes solutions and sterilize for Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine Departments

This job supports many different labs by providing needed reagents for research. Adherence to protocols and proper lab methods are required.

Ability to use independent judgment and basic knowledge of the applicable science to make chemical buffers and solutions as well as willingness to ask for help where needed.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Seldom: Exposure to animals.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
