Job Summary

Performs technical procedures in the HCI Biorepository research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. Will travel to community clinics to transport or process patient samples 25-50% of time. Responsible for maintaining work areas and equipment. Will assist with receipt and processing of biological materials, and database management for inventory and search of biospecimens.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at HCI if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

1.Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed.

2.Receiving and processing patient biospecimens, labelling samples, and appropriate database entry and storage of samples

3.Travel to remote HCI clinics to receive patient samples and either process/freeze them, or return them to HCI (transportation costs reimbursed)

4.Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment, keeping detailed records of samples and processes

5.Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.

6.Assists in maintaining the physical environment of the lab.

7.Will assist in uploading patient information into database.

Problem Solving

Work is performed under the general supervision of senior laboratory personnel. Work is frequently reviewed for accuracy and to ensure adherence to research protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports.

Be able to use personal vehicle to visit remote HCI clinics (travel expenses will be compensated).

OSHA , HIPAA , and Biosafety training will be required upon being hired.
