Job Summary

The Leung Laboratory (www.globalguthealth.org) in the Division of Infectious Diseases is seeking an experienced laboratory technician to work on translational immunology projects relating to gastrointestinal infections. We have a number of ongoing clinical studies looking at diarrheal diseases in Utah and also collaborate with laboratories in low-income countries with the goal of understanding mucosal immune responses to enteric infection and vaccination. Responsibilities of the position will include clinical specimen processing and performance of immunological and molecular assays. The candidate will be under the supervision of the laboratory PI and other senior laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

• Perform tissue culture and manipulation, including cryopreservation and thawing of cells

• Analyze cell phenotype and function using immunological and molecular techniques, including flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, ELISA , and RT- PCR

• Analyze data using statistical software and generate reports of results

• Ensure proper collection and processing of specimens from clinical studies, including the extraction, culture, and cryopreservation of cells from human tissue (including blood and tissue biopsies)

• Maintain a database for specimen collection from clinical studies

• Monitor and assist with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials

• Organize shipments to and from international collaborators and field sites

• Contribute to the preparation and delivery of written and oral presentations related to data generated in the laboratory

• Prepare and submit documents for EHS approval of laboratory procedures

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located in the Wintrobe Research Building if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms. Certain lab operational and administrative duties can be completed remotely. All remote work must be coordinated with the Principal Investigator.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Seldom: Exposure to animals.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences

Working knowledge of French is desirable.
