Job Summary

A laboratory technician position is available in the Johnson Lab at the University of Utah. We study the innate immune response to viruses and are located in the Department of Pathology in the Division of Microbiology and Immunology. This is a new laboratory and we are seeking highly motivated individuals to positively impact our research program and our culture. The individual hired for this position will be trained directly by the principal investigator, Dr. Jarrod Johnson, and will be expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory members once trained. Research experience with molecular biology and tissue culture is preferred but not required. Applicants interested in gaining research experience before pursuing graduate school or medical school are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should: 1) be organized, 2) be dependable, 3) be able to multitask, 4) be comfortable working with large numbers of samples when necessary, 5) be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, and 6) demonstrate a genuine interest in science. Increases in compensation are expected and will be based on the applicant’s performance.


  • Performs laboratory research and operations as directed by the principal investigator
  • Maintains a detailed electronic laboratory notebook
  • Maintains a detailed lab inventory
  • Attends laboratory meetings, presents data, and participates in discussions
  • Orders and stocks laboratory reagents, supplies, and consumables as needed
  • Plans and performs experiments (after training and as directed), which may involve molecular cloning, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, virus production, CRISPR -Cas9 and other genetic perturbations, protein biochemistry, flow cytometry, quantitative PCR , and next-generation sequencing
  • Critically evaluates data generated by themselves and others

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Office and laboratory environment.
  • Often: Laboratory hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, or potential exposure to chemicals), work involving recombinant DNA and blood borne pathogens.
  • Seldom: Work involving primary blood-derived cells.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

  • Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
  • Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing, pipetting), walking, standing, sitting.
  • Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
