Duties will involve rodent breeding and genotyping. Diseases studied will include cerebellar ataxias, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS . Responsibilities will be modified as the applicant gains experience in the lab.
Performs laboratory research as directed by the supervisor.
Orders supplies and experimental materials needed to conduct research.
Applicant uses his or her time effectively and seeks assistance from the supervisor as necessary to maintain efficient project forward momentum.
Self-education: Applicant reads the literature to expand his or her own abilities on the supervisor’s research.
Document assistance: As needed, the applicant conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in the supervisor’s authorship of grants and papers.
Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
Applicant attends a weekly laboratory meeting, with active participation including presentation of data.
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
