Job Summary

A position for a Lab Specialist is available in the High Throughput Genomics Shared Resource at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute. The laboratory provides experimental expertise and services to researchers throughout the University of Utah for genomic applications that use the Illumina sequencing platform. The candidate should have attention to detail and meticulous work habits. The position requires molecular biology skills, the ability to operate complex instruments, excellent communication skills, good time management and professional work etiquette. Providing instruction, interpreting experimental data and communicating experimental progress with customers of the laboratory is an essential component of the job.


  • Perform qPCR on Illumina sequencing libraries.
  • Communicate experimental progress with customers of the laboratory.
  • Construct libraries for Illumina sequencing.
  • Operate and maintain highly specialized laboratory equipment including the following: Agilent Illumina NovaSeq, Illumina MiSeq,
  • Perform qPCR on Illumina sequencing libraries.
  • Interface with technical support when necessary to troubleshoot instrumentation within the lab.
  • Record and document experimental data in the laboratory LIMS system.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency; two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.
