Position Summary
The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks an established, visionary nurse scholar to become the holder of theIda May “Dotty” Barnes, RN, and D. Keith Barnes, MD, Presidential Endowed Chair (https://nursing.utah.edu/giving/endowed-chairs/ida-may-barnes-presidential) (Est. 1999). The Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair will help to enhance the pathway for nursing and gerontology researchers, scholars, and/or clinicians in advancing the discovery, organization, transmission, and application of knowledge and health policies to meet the needs of patients, families, communities, and students.
Principal Functions and Responsibilities
The Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair will execute a programmatic vision to strengthen the College of Nursing and University of Utah Health Science national and international presence in research/scholarship, education, practice, and/or policy. Key responsibilities include leading innovative research and scholarly activities; mentoring students, fellows and junior faculty; teaching/developing curriculum; engaging in professional service; and may also include providing and/or consulting about clinical care. Collaborating with other leaders, the holder of the Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair will advocate for services and public policy, and increase College of Nursing visibility within the University, community, and nation. College of Nursing faculty are expected to live in Utah.
Criteria
We seek a candidate who is a nationally recognized leader, and whose accomplishments reflect excellence in research/creative scholarship, teaching, clinical practice, and/or community engagement. Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in nursing or another relevant field. Nurse candidates must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse ( APRN ) license in Utah, or be eligible to obtain such.
Appointment
The Barnes Presidential Endowed Chair is an administrative appointment, made by the Dean of the College of Nursing in accordance with University guidelines. The individual will maintain a tenure-line or career-line faculty position while in this role. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
The College of Nursing
The College of Nursing prepares nurses at all education levels, with a current enrollment of more than 650 students. U.S. News & World Report rankings include: #9 Online Master of Science in Nursing Education, #11 Nurse-Midwifery, #25 Doctor of Nursing Practice program, #29 Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and #38 Online Master of Science in Nursing program. The College of Nursing is also home to the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program, which was awarded Program of Merit designation.
With a nearly $45M grant funding portfolio, the University of Utah College of Nursing is consistently ranked in the top 30 in NIH funding among Colleges of Nursing and is a focal point for clinicians and researchers to collaboratively design, lead, and achieve equitable improvements for the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Our high priority research programs in the areas of health equity, social determinants of health, and chronic/serious illness complement our strengths in women’s health, gerontology, caregiving, informatics, and clinical and translational research. The Emma Eccles Jones Nursing Research Center provides unprecedented infrastructure and support for the College’s research mission, and includes highly educated and trained pre- and post-award staff support, and a biostatistics core. The College of Nursing has 10 Endowed Chairs, and is home to the Family Caregiving Collaborative, CON Simulation Center, Center of Excellence for Exposure Health Informatics ( CEEHI ), and the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. The College is also home to Health Resources and Services Administration ( HRSA )-funded training programs, including Advanced Nursing Education Workforce ( ANEW ) program; Nurse Education, Practice, Quality & Retention ( NEPQR ) program; and the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program ( GWEP ). The College is also home to an NIH -funded T32 Interdisciplinary Training Program in Cancer, Caregiving, and End-of-Life Care. In 2017, the CON was the first recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing ( AACN ) New Era for Academic Nursing award. The College received the AACN Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award in 2018. In collaboration with U Health, the college works to improve individual, family, and community health and quality of life.
