Job Summary

The Center for Equity and Student Belonging ( CESB ) First-Year Experience ( FYE ) Program Coordinator will have responsibilities in the areas of student transition from high school to college, student empowerment through knowledge and self-discovery, and academic skills strategies. The FYE Coordinator will have an abiding concern for, and commitment to, serving the diverse needs of the University community, student development in a learning organization, active promotion of an inclusive environment, and support of divisional programs and goals.

The FYE Program Coordinator plans and implements programs within the department, ensuring goals and objectives are in accordance with established criteria. Interprets program policies and advises program participants on the application of regulations.


Essential Functions

  1. Serve as the liaison between the Center for Equity and Student Belonging and the University of Utah’s Office of Admission Enrollment Management Team.
  2. Develop and implement programs to support new & incoming FYE students
  3. Program administration of the Diversity Scholars Program
  4. Research and develop a staged expansion of Diversity Scholars into a 4-year engagement program
  5. Program administration of the EDI Diversity LLC (maybe)
  6. Create, gather, analyze and generate data and assessment reports on the Diversity Scholars and FYE engagement programs
  7. Create and facilitate quarterly High Impact Practices (HIPs) events targeted to the retention of minoritized Freshman students.
  8. Work with the Early Contact Coordinator to create outreach and recruitment material for the Diversity Scholars program
  9. Organize and facilitate FYE outreach and recruitment events
  10. Coordinate with FYE review committee to recruit and select the Diversity Scholars Cohort.
  11. Coordinate communication with potential participants
  12. Develop summer supplemental support programs for incoming Diversity Scholars student.
  13. Serve as the liaison with faculty teaching the Diversity Scholars Classes and pipeline programs
  14. Create and Maintain FYE Data & Assessment
  15. Recruit, select, train and co-supervise FYE Peer Mentors & CESA Graduate Assistants
  16. Manage Communication with students (Past and Present Listserv)
  17. Maintains students’ academic files that include a record of advising activity that takes place during each visit.
  18. Develop, implement and support programs that enhance cultural awareness and education by working with students, other campus offices/departments, and resources within the community.
  19. Establish program budget; monitor and approve related expenditures and ensure budget goals are met.
  20. Establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with campus departments, student groups and colleagues.
  21. Consult faculty and staff at the University of Utah, as well as with related universities and with the AIRC , BCC , CESB , Dream Center, LGBT RC, Office of Inclusive Excellence and the OHEDI office to ensure student success and access to partnership opportunities.
  22. Serve on various University committees to initiate change and to resolve issues related to academic services and curriculum requirements.
  23. All other duties as assigned.

Problem Solving

This position provides independent coordination and decision making for all activities of a specified program. The program outcome often impacts the University as a whole. Acts as a liaison between internal and external constituencies involved in program activities. Problems arising from these coordination efforts will be addressed by the incumbent who will refer to the manager for issues outside of program policy and procedure guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
